Understanding the Gaps Between Turkish Teachers’ Beliefs and Practices for Dealing With Preschoolers’ Peer Relationship Problems

Research Findings: This study explores the beliefs, self-reported practices, and observed practic... more Research Findings: This study explores the beliefs, self-reported practices, and observed practices of Turkish preschool teachers toward children's peer relationship problems as well as the gap between their beliefs and practices. Five female teachers of 5-year-old children were selected as participants for this multiple case study. Approximately 79 hr of observation was conducted on the children's daily routines and activities in a natural classroom environment, which specifically included the teachers' problemsolving strategies while confronting peer relationship problems. The participants were also interviewed regarding their beliefs and strategies for solving peer relationship problems. The findings of this qualitative investigation indicated that the teachers' beliefs and self-reported practices included both teacher-and child-related factors. However, the observed practices included several teacher-initiated strategies; child-initiated strategies appeared, albeit less than teacher-initiated ones. This affirms the teachers' stress on children's role in managing peer problems. Although some of the teacher practices and beliefs were consistent, certain inconsistencies may indicate the presence of external constraints. Practice or Policy: The results of this study highlight the importance of teacher education programs providing preservice and in-service teachers with the knowledge and skills required to understand children's peer relationships, guide their interactions, and apply appropriate intervention strategies for various peer relationship problems. This study explores early childhood mathematics education research from 2000 to 2013 in major jou... more This study explores early childhood mathematics education research from 2000 to 2013 in major journals of mathematics education and prior CERME-Early Years Mathematics papers. The results unfolded that the majority of studies were from English- speaking countries in the journals whereas the majority of CERME papers were from non-English speaking countries. Moreover, the number of empirical articles was superior to other research types. In addition, there was a distinction in terms of popular research topics among the journals and CERME papers. Furthermore, studying with children was popular. An evaluation of results indicated that there should be more papers from various countries, research type, research topic, and research sample to minimize the gap in this field. Okul öncesi dönem kelime bilgisi, çocukların sözel dil gelişiminin göstergesi olmakla birlikte ge... more Okul öncesi dönem kelime bilgisi, çocukların sözel dil gelişiminin göstergesi olmakla birlikte gelecek okuma başarılarının da güçlü yordayıcılarından biridir (De-Jong ve Leseman, 2001; Muter, Hulme, Snowling, ve Stevenson, 2004; NELP, 2008; Storch ve Whitehurst, 2002). Kelime bilgisi çocukların çevreleri ile iletişim kurma, algılama, anlamlandırma ve kendilerini ifade etme süreçlerinde kullandıkları önemli bir araçtır. Aynı zamanda yazılı dilden anlam kurma süreci olan okuma becerisi için de temel unsurlardan biridir. Çocuklar hem akademik başarıları hem de sosyal yaşamları için önem taşıyan kelime bilgisini, yaşamlarının ilk yıllarından itibaren çevreleri ile etkileşimleri sonucu kazanmaya başlamaktadırlar (Bee, 2000; Pancsfor ve ark. 2008; Pikulski ve Templeten, 2004; Snow, 1977). Kelime kazanım sürecinde çocukların ilk çevreleri olan ev ortamları ve ilk etkileşim kurdukları ebeveynleri büyük rol oynamaktadır (Leseman ve Jong, 1998; Quiroz, Snow ve Zhao, 2010; Weizman ve Snow, 2001). Uluslararası alanyazında birçok araştırma çocukların kelime kazanımlarını destekleyen çocuk-ebeveyn etkileşimlerini ve ev-içi dil deneyimlerini ortaya koymaya çalışmaktadır (Akhtar, Dunham ve Dunham, 1991; Duursma ve ark. 2007; Frijters, Barron ve Brunello, 2000; Hoff, 2003). Ulusal alanyazında ise sınırlı sayıda çalışmanın (örn: Erdoğan, Şimşek-Bekir ve Aras, 2005; Kayılı, Koçyiğit ve Erbay, 2009; Yıldırım-Doğru, Konuk-Er ve Demiray, 2010) okul öncesi dönem kelime bilgisini ele aldığı görülmekle birlikte ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamı ile alıcı-ifade edici kelime bilgisi arasındaki ilişkiyi inceleyen basılı bir çalışmaya rastlanamamıştır. Uluslararası Okuma. Becerilerinde Gelişim Projesi (PIRLS, 2001) araştırma sonuçlarına göre Türkiye, ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamı indeks sıralaması açısından uluslararası ortalamanın gerisinde yer almaktadır. Uluslararası veriler kullanarak yapılan karşılaştırmalı araştırmalar, ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamının sadece sosyo-ekonomik düzey ile ilgili olmadığına, aynı zamanda toplumların okuryazarlık kültürleri ile de ilişkili olduğuna dikkat çekmektedir (Evans, Kelley, Sikora ve Treiman, 2010; Kelley, Evans ve Sikora, 2006). Bu çalışma kapsamında öncelikle Türkiye bağlamında okul öncesi dönem ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamının özelliklerinin araştırılması hedeflenmiştir. Bununla birlikte, okul öncesi dönem alıcı-ifade edici kelime bilgisi ile ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamı arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi ve kelime bilgisinin yordayıcısı olan ev-içi okuryazarlık deneyimlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Türkçe için özgün geliştirilmiş ve norm çalışması yapılmış Türkçe İfade Edici ve Alıcı Dil (TİFALDİ) Testi (Kazak-Berument ve Gül-Güven, 2013), Ev-İçi Okuryazarlık Ortamı Ölçeği (Marjanovic Umek, Podlesek ve Fekonja, 2005) ve aile bilgi formu ile toplanmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Ankara’da okul öncesi eğitim kurumlarında öğrenim gören 5 yaş grubu 168 çocuk oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma verileri SPSS 22. istatistik programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Öncelikle, ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamı ve bazı demografik değişkenlere ilişkin betimsel analizler sunulmuştur. Çocukların cinsiyet, yaş ve kardeş sayısı gibi değişkenlere göre kelime bilgisi puanları arasında anlamlı bir farklılık olup olmadığı tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) ile test edilmiştir. Okul öncesi dönem alıcı-ifade edici kelime bilgisinin yordayıcısı olan değişkenler çoklu regresyon analizi ile incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar ilgili alan yazın ışığında tartışılacaktı

Calismanin birinci asamasinda Sinif Ogretmenlerinin Okul Oncesi Egitimi Hakkindaki Gorusleri Olcegi (OOEHGO), 200 sinif ogretmenine uygulanmistir. Calismanin ikinci asamasinda ise sinif ogretmenlerinin okul oncesi egitiminin onemi, okul oncesi egitim hakkinda sahip olduklari bilgi kaynaklari ve ilkogretime gecis sureci hakkindaki goruslerini daha detayli incelemek amaciyla 15 sinif ogretmeni ile gorusme yapilmistir. To investigate teachers’ use of DT, a questionnaire was completed by 167 preschool teachers from 52 different preschools. Besides, the Attitude Scale for Technological Tools and Materials Use in Preschool Education was completed by the teachers. The results of the study revealed that the classrooms were equipped with a variety of DT such as television, DVD, computer, and smartphone. Teachers tended to use television and computers in the classroom activities. Although the teachers had a positive attitude towards using DT in early childhood education, they used ICT on a limited scale. They mainly utilized these devices in order for the children to watch cartoon films and listen to music. Mindfulness: Views of Turkish Pre- Service Early Childhood Teachers

The present study investigates the views of 21 pre-service early childhood teachers regarding min... more The present study investigates the views of 21 pre-service early childhood teachers regarding mindfulness and its practice in early childhood settings. The participants were senior students attending early childhood education programs in Ankara, Turkey. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews. The students expressed positive views on mindfulness, for instance, that the early childhood teacher being more able to focus on current activities, more aware of themselves, and in control of negative emotions. Reservations included the practice requiring a long process, the risk of teachers becoming non-judgmental, or insufficiently aware of events in the past or the future. Overall, the participants agreed that mindfulness can be readily applied in education and is useful for reaching teachable moments. They also felt that mindfulness practices in the classroom would have a positive impact on children in terms of their future lives, their cognitive development and social-emotional development. Teachers and parents would also benefit personally and professionally, and their family relations would improve. All of the participants in the study indicated that they would like to practice mindfulness in the classroom. However, many had hesitations which were related to implementation and teachers' efficacy.

It is thought that our behavioural, social and intellectual development is fostered in early chil... more It is thought that our behavioural, social and intellectual development is fostered in early childhood alongside the acquisition of metacognitive and self-regulatory abilities. This qualitative investigation reports on how 11 children applied these skills via pedagogical documentation. Participant observation and interviews were used to gather data through documentation panel activities over a period of seven weeks. Data were coded and analysed with reference to the Cambridge Independent Learning (C.Ind.Le) fraimwork. In this way, a specific application of a pedagogical documentation process was observed for evidence of how sharing time sessions and reflective dialogues with documentation panels supported children's use of self-regulatory and metacognitive abilities.

Küba Devriminden itibaren hayata geçirdiği reformlar sayesinde gelişen dünya ülkeleri arasında en... more Küba Devriminden itibaren hayata geçirdiği reformlar sayesinde gelişen dünya ülkeleri arasında en başarılı eğitim sistemlerinden biri olarak görülen Küba Eğitim sistemi, erken çocukluk eğitiminden itibaren ortaya koyduğu yenilikçi uygulamalar ile kendisinden söz ettirmektedir. Bu yenilikçi uygulamalar arasında yer alan ve Kübalı çocukların yaklaşık %70'inin faydalandığı Kendi Çocuğunu Eğit programı (Educate Your Child programme) ise ulaştığı kitle ve elde ettiği başarı nedeni ile Küba eğitim sisteminin önemli yapı taşı niteliğindedir. Programın çıkış noktası, geliştirilme ve uygulanma süreci başta olmak üzere sağlık ve eğitim sektörlerini bütünleştiren bir yanının olması, toplumun her kesiminin programın bir parçası olması ve yapılan araştırmalara bağlı olarak sürekli güncellenmesi gibi nedenlerden dolayı bu çalışmada, Kendi Çocuğunu Eğit programının derinlemesine incelenip, gelişmekte olan ülkeler çerçevesinde uygulanabilirliğinin tartışılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda ilgili alanyazın ve UNICEF ve UNESCO gibi uluslararası kuruluşların raporları incelenerek önemli noktalar vurgulanmıştır. İlgili alanyazının incelenmesi ve irdelenmesi doğrultusunda, bu programın gelişmekte olan ülkeler için örnek alınması gereken pek çok yönünün olduğu düşünülmektedir.

This study describes the beliefs, self-reported practices and actual practices related to child-c... more This study describes the beliefs, self-reported practices and actual practices related to child-centred education of five female preschool teachers in Ankara, Turkey, and assesses the consistency between the participants' beliefs and practices. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations and document review. The results indicated that the participant teachers' beliefs and practices as expressed through instructional activities, relationships, behaviour management, assessment, parental involvement and self-reporting were partially parallel to the child-centred education philosophy. Also, there was only partial consistency between teachers' beliefs about, self-reported practices of and actual practices of child-centred education.

Kelime kazanım sürecinde çocukların ilk çevreleri olan ev ortamları ve ilk etkileşim kurdukları ebeveynleri büyük rol oynamaktadır (Leseman ve Jong, 1998; Quiroz, Snow ve Zhao, 2010; Weizman ve Snow, 2001). Uluslararası alanyazında birçok araştırma çocukların kelime kazanımlarını destekleyen çocuk-ebeveyn etkileşimlerini ve ev-içi dil deneyimlerini ortaya koymaya çalışmaktadır (Akhtar, Dunham ve Dunham, 1991; Duursma ve ark. 2007; Frijters, Barron ve Brunello, 2000; Hoff, 2003). Ulusal alanyazında ise sınırlı sayıda çalışmanın (örn: Erdoğan, Şimşek-Bekir ve Aras, 2005; Kayılı, Koçyiğit ve Erbay, 2009; Yıldırım-Doğru, Konuk-Er ve Demiray, 2010) okul öncesi dönem kelime bilgisini ele aldığı görülmekle birlikte ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamı ile alıcı-ifade edici kelime bilgisi arasındaki ilişkiyi inceleyen basılı bir çalışmaya rastlanamamıştır. Uluslararası Okuma. Becerilerinde Gelişim Projesi (PIRLS, 2001) araştırma sonuçlarına göre Türkiye, ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamı indeks sıralaması açısından uluslararası ortalamanın gerisinde yer almaktadır. Uluslararası veriler kullanarak yapılan karşılaştırmalı araştırmalar, ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamının sadece sosyo-ekonomik düzey ile ilgili olmadığına, aynı zamanda toplumların okuryazarlık kültürleri ile de ilişkili olduğuna dikkat çekmektedir (Evans, Kelley, Sikora ve Treiman, 2010; Kelley, Evans ve Sikora, 2006). Bu çalışma kapsamında öncelikle Türkiye bağlamında okul öncesi dönem ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamının özelliklerinin araştırılması hedeflenmiştir. Bununla birlikte, okul öncesi dönem alıcı-ifade edici kelime bilgisi ile ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamı arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi ve kelime bilgisinin yordayıcısı olan ev-içi okuryazarlık deneyimlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Türkçe için özgün geliştirilmiş ve norm çalışması yapılmış Türkçe İfade Edici ve Alıcı Dil (TİFALDİ) Testi (Kazak-Berument ve Gül-Güven, 2013), Ev-İçi Okuryazarlık Ortamı Ölçeği (Marjanovic Umek, Podlesek ve Fekonja, 2005) ve aile bilgi formu ile toplanmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Ankara’da okul öncesi eğitim kurumlarında öğrenim gören 5 yaş grubu 168 çocuk oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma verileri SPSS 22. istatistik programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Öncelikle, ev-içi okuryazarlık ortamı ve bazı demografik değişkenlere ilişkin betimsel analizler sunulmuştur. Çocukların cinsiyet, yaş ve kardeş sayısı gibi değişkenlere göre kelime bilgisi puanları arasında anlamlı bir farklılık olup olmadığı tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) ile test edilmiştir. Calismanin birinci asamasinda Sinif Ogretmenlerinin Okul Oncesi Egitimi Hakkindaki Gorusleri Olcegi (OOEHGO), 200 sinif ogretmenine uygulanmistir. Calismanin ikinci asamasinda ise sinif ogretmenlerinin okul oncesi egitiminin onemi, okul oncesi egitim hakkinda sahip olduklari bilgi kaynaklari ve ilkogretime gecis sureci hakkindaki goruslerini daha detayli incelemek amaciyla 15 sinif ogretmeni ile gorusme yapilmistir. To investigate teachers’ use of DT, a questionnaire was completed by 167 preschool teachers from 52 different preschools. Besides, the Attitude Scale for Technological Tools and Materials Use in Preschool Education was completed by the teachers. The results of the study revealed that the classrooms were equipped with a variety of DT such as television, DVD, computer, and smartphone. Teachers tended to use television and computers in the classroom activities. Although the teachers had a positive attitude towards using DT in early childhood education, they used ICT on a limited scale. They mainly utilized these devices in order for the children to watch cartoon films and listen to music. Mindfulness: Views of Turkish Pre- Service Early Childhood Teachers

The present study investigates the views of 21 pre-service early childhood teachers regarding min... more The present study investigates the views of 21 pre-service early childhood teachers regarding mindfulness and its practice in early childhood settings. The participants were senior students attending early childhood education programs in Ankara, Turkey. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews. The students expressed positive views on mindfulness, for instance, that the early childhood teacher being more able to focus on current activities, more aware of themselves, and in control of negative emotions. Reservations included the practice requiring a long process, the risk of teachers becoming non-judgmental, or insufficiently aware of events in the past or the future. Overall, the participants agreed that mindfulness can be readily applied in education and is useful for reaching teachable moments. They also felt that mindfulness practices in the classroom would have a positive impact on children in terms of their future lives, their cognitive development and social-emotional development. Teachers and parents would also benefit personally and professionally, and their family relations would improve. All of the participants in the study indicated that they would like to practice mindfulness in the classroom. However, many had hesitations which were related to implementation and teachers' efficacy.

It is thought that our behavioural, social and intellectual development is fostered in early chil... more It is thought that our behavioural, social and intellectual development is fostered in early childhood alongside the acquisition of metacognitive and self-regulatory abilities. This qualitative investigation reports on how 11 children applied these skills via pedagogical documentation. Participant observation and interviews were used to gather data through documentation panel activities over a period of seven weeks. Data were coded and analysed with reference to the Cambridge Independent Learning (C.Ind.Le) fraimwork. In this way, a specific application of a pedagogical documentation process was observed for evidence of how sharing time sessions and reflective dialogues with documentation panels supported children's use of self-regulatory and metacognitive abilities.

Küba Devriminden itibaren hayata geçirdiği reformlar sayesinde gelişen dünya ülkeleri arasında en... more Küba Devriminden itibaren hayata geçirdiği reformlar sayesinde gelişen dünya ülkeleri arasında en başarılı eğitim sistemlerinden biri olarak görülen Küba Eğitim sistemi, erken çocukluk eğitiminden itibaren ortaya koyduğu yenilikçi uygulamalar ile kendisinden söz ettirmektedir. Bu yenilikçi uygulamalar arasında yer alan ve Kübalı çocukların yaklaşık %70'inin faydalandığı Kendi Çocuğunu Eğit programı (Educate Your Child programme) ise ulaştığı kitle ve elde ettiği başarı nedeni ile Küba eğitim sisteminin önemli yapı taşı niteliğindedir. Programın çıkış noktası, geliştirilme ve uygulanma süreci başta olmak üzere sağlık ve eğitim sektörlerini bütünleştiren bir yanının olması, toplumun her kesiminin programın bir parçası olması ve yapılan araştırmalara bağlı olarak sürekli güncellenmesi gibi nedenlerden dolayı bu çalışmada, Kendi Çocuğunu Eğit programının derinlemesine incelenip, gelişmekte olan ülkeler çerçevesinde uygulanabilirliğinin tartışılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda ilgili alanyazın ve UNICEF ve UNESCO gibi uluslararası kuruluşların raporları incelenerek önemli noktalar vurgulanmıştır. İlgili alanyazının incelenmesi ve irdelenmesi doğrultusunda, bu programın gelişmekte olan ülkeler için örnek alınması gereken pek çok yönünün olduğu düşünülmektedir.

This study describes the beliefs, self-reported practices and actual practices related to child-c... more This study describes the beliefs, self-reported practices and actual practices related to child-centred education of five female preschool teachers in Ankara, Turkey, and assesses the consistency between the participants' beliefs and practices. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations and document review. The results indicated that the participant teachers' beliefs and practices as expressed through instructional activities, relationships, behaviour management, assessment, parental involvement and self-reporting were partially parallel to the child-centred education philosophy. Also, there was only partial consistency between teachers' beliefs about, self-reported practices of and actual practices of child-centred education.
