Somewhat unrelated to this, but if you like Freelancer, check out Underspace. It's got that same open-space vibe but with spooky stuff too (not sponsored or anything, just a similar vibe game!).

I know about Underspace and it looks very promising! I’m still looking for the spiritual successor of Freelancer somewhere out there and I’m wondering what will be the one space-sim that has that flavour of space I liked about Freelancer.
Nevertheless, thank you for the recommendation, I tip my hat for the good taste you certainly have ;)
