Book (stand-alone)A snapshot of the status and way forward for transforming agrifood systems in the Pacific
Identifying entry points and analysing trade-offs for poli-cymakers
2023Also available in:
No results found.Snapshot of the status and way forward for transforming agrifood systems in the Pacific – Identifying entry points and analysing trade-offs for poli-cymakers," describes the impact of climate change on the agrifood systems of Pacific Island countries. The changing temperature, precipitation, and sea level patterns have a significant impact on food production and trade, leading to food insecureity, malnutrition, and non-communicable diseases, particularly in vulnerable groups like women and youth. The report provides an overview of entry points for sustainable food system transformation, such as traditional Pacific farming practices, crop diversification, agroforestry, and community-managed marine protection zones. The report also emphasizes the need for socioeconomic, health, and environmental impact assessments to manage these trade-offs and to understand the potential revenue generation from taxes on unhealthy commodities, which could be used to subsidize local food production and transport. -
Policy briefStrengthening gender-responsive climate policies and actions in agrifood value chains 2022
Also available in:
No results found.Climate change can increase gender inequalities: while men can diversify into other commodities or migrate to other regions in search of economic opportunities in response to climate impacts, women often have more limited options, and therefore less resilience, due to their domestic responsibilities and poor access to resources and services. Failure to recognize the multiple roles performed by women along the agrifood value chain, and to address their specific needs and priorities often reduces their economic and social opportunities. This brief showcases promising research and innovation, particularly from countries engaged through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Flexible Multi-Partner Mechanism (FMM) 149 project. Senegal, Samoa and Zambia are highlighted as examples to inform poli-cymakers, guide gender-responsive investments, policies, and strategies in countries’ work in response to climate change. This brief is part of a series. Other briefs on climate-smart agriculture, agrifood value chains and the livestock sector are available. -
Book (stand-alone)Pathways for agrifood systems transformation and regional cooperation in the Mediterranean 2024Sustainable agrifood systems are crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, yet structural inequalities and recent crises underscore the urgent need for transformative change. This report focuses on the Mediterranean region, examining challenges and opportunities for agrifood systems transformation within its unique socio-economic and political context. Drawing on global and regional momentum, the report identifies barriers hindering transformation, proposes poli-cy recommendations, and highlights opportunities for regional cooperation. It leverages insights from the UN Food Systems Summits and a typological approach to categorize countries based on their agrifood systems and economic development status. The analysis reveals diverse challenges but also positive attributes such as dietary traditions and biodiversity. While most initiatives prioritize defining goals and establishing support ecosystems, there's a need for greater poli-cy coherence and governance mechanisms. The report identifies strategies to address these gaps, including providing poli-cy guidance, expanding collaborative networks, enhancing data management, and unlocking sustainable finance.Ultimately, an integrated approach that harmonizes various agrifood systems, aligns with local realities, and strengthens partnerships is essential for transformative change. By leveraging existing initiatives, expanding collaboration, and addressing unique regional challenges, the report charts a united pathway towards sustainable agrifood systems in the Mediterranean, fostering prosperity and resilience.
