NWS Area Forecast Discussions (AFDs) are text products written by NWS forecasters that allow them to detail the reasoning behind their forecast. Forecasters will often (but not always) reference the products and tools that were important in helping them arrive to the given forecast. This page includes a collection of AFDs that contain direct reference to low-earth orbiting satellite imagery and products. Researchers and other forecasters may use these references to get an idea of how forecasters are incorporating such datasets into their forecasts.
Included are references to imagery and products from low-earth orbiting imagers such as AVHRR, MODIS, and VIIRS. Additional references include popular products derived from other low-earth orbiting instruments, such as NUCAPS, Scatterometer winds, and Blended TPW.
The references are organized by Weather Forecast office (WFO) by year. For each reference, the reference-containing line is included, along with a link to the full AFD.
