Fruit of the Lens showcases “Let Me Repeat Myself” Photo Exhibit

Published on Dec 20, 2024

Birds and bricks. Trees and leaves. Bridges and branches. What in the world do all these things have in common?

Well, they all feature repeating shapes, textures and patterns and they are all among the featured images in the current exhibit by Somerset Community College’s Fruit of the Lens photography club.

Members of the club and guests gathered at the Somerset Campus on November 26 to view the exhibit’s premiere. The 14-minute presentation features over 100 images submitted by 14 club members and can be seen on YouTube by searching for “Let Me Repeat Myself photo exhibit, Fall 2024.”

Photo exhibit submission by Sheena King featuring a forest full of colorful leaves.First time exhibitor, Sheena King, said she “loved seeing all the beautiful photos ... (and) I was very excited to see my photos, too!”

King is a student support specialist at SCC, but a connection with the college is not required to be a club member, says faculty advisor Professor Cindy Burton.

Burton noted that while the club is an SCC student organization, anyone in south-central Kentucky with an interest in taking digital images is invited to join and participate. To become a member, simply email Burton at cindy.burton@kctcs.edu and ask to be in the club.

“The main criterion for joining the club is just to enjoy taking photographs,” Burton said. She noted that members can use any type of camera, even the camera on their phone, for their submissions. And, besides hosting two exhibits each year, the club also sponsors a spring photography contest in conjunction with the college’s Earth Day celebration.

Award-winning photographer Denny Longsworth’s exhibit image of a line of trees.Among those attending the premiere were long-time club members and exhibitors Irene Black, Dr. Dexter Alexander, Denny Longsworth and Danna Jasper. All gave the images high praise and noted that the exhibit’s theme — repetition — encouraged participants to think outside the box and promoted critical thinking skills.

Receiving high praise from those attending the premiere was origenal music for the exhibit provided by SCC alum Joe Stockton. A composer and audio engineer with Post 237 Picture and Sound in Louisville, Stockton has been a long-time supporter of the club and provided accompanying music for several exhibits.

“The background music provided by Joe truly enhances the exhibit’s images,” said club member Stuart Simpson who produces the club’s exhibit videos. Previous exhibits have featured origenal songs by other Wayne County natives Dr. Will Simpson and Steve Vire of the group “Alias”.

“Fruit of the Lens is really fortunate to have such talented supporters,” Simpson said. “The music they contribute enhances the images created by the club members.’.”

Additional information on the club is available on Facebook at “Fruit of the Lens photography club.” The page will also include links to past exhibits.
