Sony is working on an AI-powered version of one of its video game characters. The Verge learned about it from an internal video from Sony’s PlayStation group.
The tech news outlet reported on its findings via a YouTube video. Later, copyright enforcement company Muso made a copyright claim, taking the clip down.

Sharwin Rachoedarbajal, a director of software at Sony Interactive Entertainment, narrated this internal clip.
It shows Raghoebardajal demonstrating an AI-powered version of Aloy, the main character of the video game, “Horizon Zero Dawn.”
The tech demo uses OpenAI’s Whisper for speech-to-text generation. Also, it utilizes GPT-4 and Meta’s Llama 3 for conversations and decision-making.
The Verge says Sony has an internal Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) system for speech generation and Sony’s Mockingbird tech for audio-to-face animation.
The AI-powered video game character runs on PC, but Raghoebardajal says Sony’s PlayStation 5 consoles can also do so with “little overhead.”
These experiments would likely intensify discussions over the role of artificial intelligence in video game creation.
The Economist reports that the video game industry is “the largest sector of entertainment.”
Most estimates show that it surpasses the sales of film and music combined. As a result, these AI-powered video game characters will have a massive impact on global entertainment.
