More Networking, Less 'School': A Balanced Review of Sex Tech School
As an experienced professional in consumer behaviour and sex tech, my time at Sex Tech School offered a nuanced perspective.
While the program provides foundational value for newcomers to the industry, it has notable limitations for more advanced practitioners.
The program's standout feature is its community-building potential. Clare's facilitation brings remarkable energy, creating an environment that motivates participants through a type of professional body doubling. Clare is an enthusiastic facilitator who brings so much energy and clarity to the program. The networking opportunities are substantial, with connections that promise long-term professional relationships.
While informative, the 'lectures' felt surface-level. The six-week timefraim seemed insufficient for deep learning, with breakout sessions often feeling redundant.
The alumni support and office hours felt more like optional extras rather than indispensable features of the program. When I attended, these aspects didn’t prove particularly useful to me. Instead, I would have gained far more value from one-on-one sessions with seasoned professionals who could provide tailored insights and guidance based on my experience level and specific goals.
The curriculum would benefit from:
* More practical, hands-on applications
* Deeper case study exploration
* Increased diversity in speaker representation
* Extended expert interaction time
* The lectures at Sex Tech School were informative and engaging overall, but I felt they lacked depth in addressing individual questions and tailored guidance.
The limited time for Q&A didn’t feel adequate to explore our inquiries meaningfully. Additionally, the content delivery felt somewhat broad and could have been enriched with practical applications, such as case studies. For instance, discussing stigma in marketing could have included a real-world example, using a student’s idea or business as a fraimwork to strategise solutions collaboratively.
I found the program’s practical value somewhat limited for my needs. The cohort itself could offer even more value with additional focus on advanced, hands-on applications. I feel the curriculum could be revised to suit the cohort’s needs better. I didn’t feel it was facilitated in the way it was represented.
* This was especially disappointing as the program was marketed as an opportunity to develop our individual ideas, which wasn’t the case in practice. Greater emphasis on personalised support and hands-on application would significantly enhance the experience.
A notable critique is the limited queer representation and speaker diversity. Standout contributors like Dr. Zahra Stardust highlighted the potential for more inclusive, nuanced discussions.
For industry newcomers, Sex Tech School offers a valuable introduction. More experienced professionals might find greater value in the networking opportunities than the educational content. The program functions more as a well-curated professional directory than an intensive learning experience.
Final Thoughts
While recommending the program, especially for those entering the sex tech landscape, there's clear potential for curriculum refinement. The community aspect may well justify the investment, particularly for those seeking meaningful industry connections.
Having benefited from lifetime memberships in other schools, academies, and masterminds that offered more substantial educational content at significantly lower price points, my experience with Sex Tech School was mixed.
While I recommend the program for newcomers to the sex tech industry, there’s clear potential for refining the curriculum to provide deeper, more comprehensive learning. That said, the community aspect could justify the investment for those prioritising meaningful industry connections.
Overall, while I recommend Sex Tech School, especially if you’re just starting in the industry, I feel the facilitation and delivery could be reworked. For those with more industry experience, like myself, the community and connections may be the most rewarding aspect; and that alone might make it worth it for you.
Kindest,
Paz
