Women’s Soccer Remain Perfect; Defeat Detroit Mercy 2-0

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s soccer (3-0-0) remained perfect to start the season as they won their third straight game defeating Detroit Mercy (0-3-0) 2-0 at “The Bell” Thursday evening. The Wildcats win their third straight game with a scoreline of 2-0 after defeating both Central Michigan and Morehead State earlier this season. Historically, Kentucky opens the first three games of the season without conceding a goal for the first time in program history.

Despite outshooting the Titans 14-1 in the first half, Kentucky could not find a goal to break the deadlock. A multitude of headed efforts from crosses and corners barely tested Detroit Mercy goalkeeper Chantelle Symes and the Titans felt motivated as they entered the locker room at the half with a scoreline of 0-0.

Kentucky started the second half with vigor as they pushed for the opening goal, and they found it after just six minutes of play. Grace Hoytink carried the ball down the near flank and found an eager Alexis Tylenda who side-footed the ball past Symes for the 1-0 lead. It marks Tylenda’s second goal of the season and she currently leads all scorers on the team. Hoytink picked up her first assist of the season.

The Wildcats doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute after being awarded a free kick on the near side of the box. Grace Phillpotts lofted a great ball into the back post and found a strong Michelle Moskau who headed into the goal inside the six-yard box for her first collegiate goal. Phillpotts collected her second assist of the season and leads the team in that category.

Kentucky finished the game outshooting the Titans 30-1 with seven shots on goal to Detroit’s one. The biggest statistic of the night is UK’s 16 total corner kicks, a season-high. Historically, Kentucky opens the first three games of the season without conceding a goal for the first time in program history.

The Wildcats will close their season-opening home stretch of games this Sunday as they welcome Jacksonville State to the Bell at 1 p.m. ET. Season tickets for all Kentucky soccer men’s and women’s home games can be purchased here, while single-game tickets are available here. The game will also be available on SECN+.
