A study recently published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society found the following. “Some people feel that forecasts having a more concrete, real-world basis could increase understanding and motive them to take action (e.g. including a local reference point so that people are clear about what a flood-level forecast would mean on the ground).” http://www.nws.noaa.gov/…/we…/news/161121_flood%20_risk.html
Don’t forget your pets! If it’s too cold for you to be outside, it’s also too cold for your pets. Make sure to provide a warm, dry place for any animals that typically stay outdoors.

Wind can be dangerous for those out on the water. Winds are the primary cause of waves and strong winds are dangerous because they create large waves. If high winds are forecasted, adjust your plans so that you can have your boat safely stowed before conditions become hazardous. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/marine/safeboating/ Photo courtesy of the US Coast Guard

“Take it slow when driving in snow!” Of injuries related to ice and snow, about 70% occur in automobiles and about 25% are people caught out in the storm. The majority are males over 40 years old and speed is often a factor. http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/winter/
There's no season for tsunamis. They can happen at any time. On November 18, 1867, less than a month after a deadly hurricane struck the region, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake generated the most destructive and deadly tsunami in U.S. Virgin Islands recorded history. The first waves reached the shore within about 15 minutes. The NWS Caribbean Tsunami Warning Program supports improved tsunami monitoring, training and readiness in the Virgin Islands and elsewhere in the Caribbean region. Learn more: www.caribewave.info

The first snow or ice of the season can make for particularly dangerous driving conditions as folks try to remember how to navigate the slick roads. Remember to slow down, leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you, and give yourself extra time to reach your destination. Also, make sure that your mobile phone is fully charged. It could become your lifeline if disaster should strike. www.weather.gov/winter
