The NWS Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a risk of severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening across parts of the northern and central Plains, from northeast Nebraska to eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota. Large hail and damaging winds will be the main threats.

Around midnight on September 21,1989, Hurricane Hugo roared ashore just north of Charleston, S.C. as a massive Category 4 storm with winds near 140 mph and a storm tide around 20 feet. These extra minutes for Humboldt residents were possible thanks to an upgrade to the nation’s Doppler radars, the most important tool forecasters use to track tornadoes. This upgrade—another step on our effort to build a Weather-Ready Nation—will be completed in fall 2014.

NOAA predicts moderate flood potential in Midwest, elevated risk of ice jams; California and Southwest stuck with drought

According to NOAA's Spring Outlook released today, rivers in half of the continental United States are at minor or moderate risk of exceeding flood levels this spring with the highest threat in the southern Great Lakes region due to above-average snowpack and a deep layer of frozen ground. Additionally, drought is expected to continue in California and the Southwest.

NWS Eastern Region Provides Decision Support for Super Bowl XLVIII

The National "Turn Around Don't Drown" Program turns 10 years old in 2014

Flooding remains one of the top weather killers in the U.S., with the average number of annual fatalities totaling near 90. More than half of these fatalities are vehicle-related. The National Weather Service has been working to bring those numbers down and, for the past decade, has been doing so using its “Turn Around Don’t Drown” campaign, which is dedicated to teaching the public about flood safety.
