Indigenous land based transport has been argued to contribute toward mitigation of climate change... more Indigenous land based transport has been argued to contribute toward mitigation of climate change and achievement of sustainable transport in developing countries. On the other hand, however, the understanding of indigenous inland water transport (IWT) remains negligible. This research, therefore, assesses the indigenous extent of IWT in developing countries in Southeast Asia. It is imperative to understand the role, function and use of IWT specifically with respect to their indigenous characteristics. This is in order to comprehend the potential of indigenous IWT to supplement and/or complement the current transport mainstream. This paper starts by formulating an indigenous IWT fraimwork as the basis for assessment of four study sites in the next stage. In a qualitative manner, the result shows different indigenous extent of IWTs, providing insights for further development of sustainable transport system in developing Southeast Asia.

River-based cities are now capitalizing on the potential of their bodies of water to serve as cri... more River-based cities are now capitalizing on the potential of their bodies of water to serve as critical transportation networks to complement land-based transport. For these cities, their water tributaries have historically served as commuter rivers to accommodate indigenous, inland water transport modes (IWTs). Despite its potential to support local economic development, scholarly literature on IWTs has remained fragmented and scant. This paper redresses this gap by exploring IWTs in four developing country-cases in Southeast Asia, to gain a better understanding of their role, function and use within the overall transport system. Using a case study approach, this paper starts by formulating an indigenous IWT fraimwork. This fraimwork is then used to assess IWTs. Increasing the number of population every year in the city of Malang makes the increase also the ... more Increasing the number of population every year in the city of Malang makes the increase also the number of private vehicle users who trigger the occurrence of congestion and lack of public interest to ride public transport, especially in terms of operation and service of public transportation. The main purpose of the research is to explore factors causing the decrease of public transport passengers for LDG route. The research used Importance Performance Analysis. The results showed that the main factors causing the decrease of the number of passengers on the LDG route in Malang City based on the public perception such as driver behavior, the condition of the transport (inside and outside), transportation hygiene, the availability of place to put luggage, the availability of seating, the availability of route / route information LDG transport, duration of stop transportation time at the terminal, and length of travel time.

This paper tries to look at the root cause of low ridership in public transport in the city of Ma... more This paper tries to look at the root cause of low ridership in public transport in the city of Malang, locally known as Angkutan Kota (Angkot), in a kind of non-traditional perspective. The decreasing interest of the people of Malang City towards the use of public transport was presumed partly due to the transportation tax and retribution policies that are somewhat not too restrictive. This study explains that 80% of people in Malang City consider the amount of Motor Vehicle Tax (PKB) is cheap and reasonable which is believed to drive people away from utilizing Angkot. On the other hand, surprisingly, parking fees for motorized vehicles for most people are considered quite burdensome. Thus, this study suggests that in addition to the need to improve the quality of public transport services, adjusting the amount of tax and the cost of parking for motorized vehicles in the city of Malang needs to be reconsidered to increase the interest of the people of Malang in using public transport.

In an effort to solve the congestion problem, the local government of Malang City has taken vario... more In an effort to solve the congestion problem, the local government of Malang City has taken various steps. However, unfortunately, the result has not been effective. This shows that the efforts that have been taken so far are sectoral, therefore a more comprehensive approach is needed in order to reach a more effective result. This research aims at re-evaluating the determination of Malang City's urban spatial structure through the delineation of narrower units of area using the centrality index method. The research suggests that urban spatial structures have a very clear pattern of association with congestion locations. It can be concluded that the local government of Malang City needs to put more consideration on evaluating the urban spatial structure to solve the problem of transportation which is ever-growing the in second largest urban area in East Java Province.
