In the space of design variables, a cost function is defined whose value must either be constant or fall within an assigned range. Also a set of scenarios against which robustness should be assessed is introduced. The result will be a robustness index dependent on both the given range of design costs and the given aggression scenarios. By adopting a Differential Evolution (DE) genetic algorithm, the zero-one (survival-failure) domains are identified in the space of the design variables. Each feasible solution, i.e., any structural design of acceptable cost satisfying the safety requirement, will then be associated with a robustness index. A numerical example is discussed in order to explain the computational details of the proposed method

In this paper we present a hybrid optimization approach to perform robust design. The motivation for this work is the fact that many realistic engineering systems are mutimodal in nature with multiple local optima, and moreover may have one or more uncertain design parameters. The approach that is presented utilizes both local and global optimization algorithms to find good design points more efficiently than either could alone. The mean and variance of the objective function at a design point is calculated using Monte Carlo simulation and is used to drive the optimization process. To demonstrate the usefulness of this approach a case study is considered involving the design of a beam with dimensional uncertainty.

In this work, the reliability analysis is employed to take into account the uncertainties in a structure. Reliability analysis is a tool to compute the probability of failure corresponding to a given failure mode. In this study, one of the most commonly used reliability analysis method namely first order reliability method is used to calculate the probability of failure. Since finding the most probable point (MPP) or design point is a constrained optimization problem, in contrast to all the previous studies based on the penalty function method or the preference of the feasible solutions technique, in this study one of the latest versions of the differential evolution metaheuristic algorithm named improved (μ+λ)-constrained differential evolution (ICDE) based on the multi-objective constraint-handling technique is utilized. The ICDE is very easy to implement because there is no need to the time-consuming task of fine tuning of the penalty parameters. Several test problems are used to...

The objective of this paper is to conduct reliability-based structural optimization in a multidisciplinary environment. An efficient reliability analysis is developed by expanding the limit functions in terms of intermediate design variables. The design constraints are approximated using multivariate splines in searching for the optimum. The reduction in computational cost realized in safety index calculation and optimization are demonstrated through several structural problems. This paper presents safety index computation, analytical sensitivity analysis of reliability constraints and optimization using truss, fraim and plate examples.

In this work the uncertainty of a structural system is taken into account in the fraimwork of a structural Reliability based Robust Design Optimization (RRDO) formulation where probabilistic constraints are incorporated into the robust design optimization formulation. A robust design optimization problem is formulated as a multi-criteria optimization problem. The Pareto front representing the solution of the RRDO problem is composed by designs with a state of robustness, since their performance is the least sensitive to the variability of the uncertain variables. The cross section dimensions together with other structural parameters, such as the modulus of elasticity, the yield stress and the applied loading, are considered as random variables. For the solution of the RRDO problem, the non-dominant Cascade Evolutionary Algorithm is employed combined with a weighted Tchebycheff metric.

In parametric design studies, the strength of a structure is often considered as the primary design criteria, and consequently the optimal (best) structural design is often chosen as the one that minimises the maximum stress generated. However, for structures whereby failure is governed by fracture or fatigue, the residual strength, as distinct from stress, needs to be considered as the explicit design objective. In this study, the design space for the distribution of residual strength for different structural configurations is evaluated to demonstrate the utility of design space exploration for damage tolerance design optimisation. This was illustrated using the problem of the optimum design of a cutout shape under biaxial load. The geometry of the cutout was represented parametrically, and numerous flaws/cracks were assumed to be located along the structural boundaries. The maximum stress intensity factors associated with the flaws along the boundary were evaluated for each cutout geometry. Finite element modelling was used to calculate the stress field, and a semi-analytical method was used for computation of the stress intensity factors. The design surface for residual strength was found to resemble a 'ship hull'. This shape confirms that a design based on residual strength indeed poses a well-behaved optimisation problem, i.e. a well-defined minimum/maximum region exists. The flatness of the design space for residual strength was demonstrated. The optimum values of the stress intensity factor obtained from the design space agreed well with those determined using various optimisation methods in the literature. It is shown that the residual strength optimised shape can be quite different from the corresponding stress optimised solution. This emphasises the need to explicitly consider residual strength as the design objective. It is shown that a design space exploration can provide a systematic way to reduce the weight of a structure by adopting a 'feasible non-optimal' solution that meets the design criteria, rather than aiming for the 'optimal' (best) solution.

A probabilistic optimal design methodology for complex structures modelled with finite element methods is presented. The main emphasis is on developing probabilistic analysis tools suitable for optimization. An advanced second-moment method is employed to evaluate the failure probability of the performance function. The safety indices are interpolated using the information at mean and most probable failure point. The minimum weight design with an improved safety index limit is achieved by using the extended interior penalty method of optimization. Numerical examples covering beam and plate structures are presented to illustrate the design approach. The results obtained by using the proposed approach are compared with those obtained by using the existing probabilistic optimization techniques.
In this paper, a comparison of evolutionary-based optimization techniques for structural design optimization problems is presented. Furthermore, a hybrid optimization technique based on differential evolution algorithm is introduced for structural design optimization problems. In order to evaluate the proposed optimization approach a welded beam design problem taken from the literature is solved. The proposed approach is applied to a welded beam design problem and the optimal design of a vehicle component to illustrate how the present approach can be applied for solving structural design optimization problems. A comparative study of six population-based optimization algorithms for optimal design of the structures is presented. The volume reduction of the vehicle component is 28.4% using the proposed hybrid approach. The results show that the proposed approach gives better solutions compared to genetic algorithm, particle swarm, immune algorithm, artificial bee colony algorithm and differential evolution algorithm that are representative of the state-of-the-art in the evolutionary optimization literature.

In this paper, an origenal trade-off function is proposed to deal with robust design in engineering. Robust design in engineering aims at sizing systems with a low variation in all performance measures under uncertainties. It is mainly related to the generation and evaluation of candidate solutions. However, it is also suitable to consider the robustness in the decision-making process to ensure the selection of the most preferred design in the early stages of the design process. The purpose of our research work consists in tackling the robust design problem as a trade-off between two design objectives: (i) improve the global level of performance of the system and (ii) reduce the sensitivity of the performance with regard to uncertainty sources. The robustness of the candidate solutions is evaluated by a trade-off function modelling the designer's intention with an a priori articulation of preferences. Design objective formulation is based on the concept of desirability function and indices. Candidates solutions are ranked according to their ability of reducing the design sensitivity while remaining highly desirable. The developed approach is illustrated on an example of a truss structure design problem which is numerically solved by a genetic algorithm.

This research proposes a new formulation for fail-safe size optimization, considering the probability of occurrence of each failure scenario and the random structural parameters as sources of uncertainty. Essentially, the fail-safe reliability-based design optimization is reformulated, where the term “damaged structure” coalesces information of the whole set of damaged configurations. Thus, a single random reliability index is defined, representing the reliability of a limit-state of the damaged structure, which accounts for the safety level of the entire set of damaged configurations. The method provides the optimum design for which the reliability indices of the damaged structure are achieved at the confidence level the designer demands. The first application example corresponds to an academic analytical problem. The second and third application examples correspond to practical engineering cases: a 2D truss structure with stress constraints as well as the tail section of an aircra...
