This essay reflects on an 8 month sabbatical journey in various parts of the world (Uganda, South Africa, Brazil, the Netherlands, Prague, Berlin). It particularly explores the practices of deep listening, cultivating a faculty of seeing and aliveness.

Taking a sabbatical or academic leave is becoming less popular owing to the problems associated with dual income families and the need to keep research programs running. This paper advances strong arguments for fitting well-timed leaves into one's long-range academic plans. The author has taken four sabbaticals and four academic leaves during the 37 years of his full-time academic career and has had four extended visiting faculty appointments since his retirement. His experience has included appointments at one U.S. and nine foreign universities, the National Science Foundation and two multinational companies. This paper will discuss the advantages of taking sabbatical and academic leaves to one's teaching, research, cultural, and personal development. Examples will be given on how a leave experience made an irrevocably positive difference in the author's teaching. Information also will be given on how to plan for a leave. In particular, this paper will discuss possible sources of funding for a leave. The author will also discuss how one can handle keeping an active research program going while on leave. Suggestions will also be given on how to involve one's family in the leave experience. The main thrust of this paper is the important point that taking a sabbatical or academic leave is an investment in your future that will pay wonderful and unforeseen benefits.

What if we considered the sabbatical as a sacred time for renewal and wholeness? How might this understanding of sabbatical change the way we see ourselves as teachers, scholars, and human beings? How might it shape the way we approach our teaching and scholarship in more creative, holistic, and meaningful ways? And what implications might the idea of sabbatical as sacred time and as contemplative practice have for how we as faculty negotiate the challenges of the contemporary neoliberal academy? These are some of the questions I explore in this essay.

International exchange is an important aspect of academic life. Thus, international sabbaticals are, in general, seen as a measure of research collaboration, networking, and international standing. There are, however, a few groups who are likely to be disadvantaged by such criteria even though they may be implicit, that is, those for whom international travel is problematic. Using reflective learning, the researchers conducted a virtual sabbatical for six months as a metaphorical "ramp"-that is, a way of making international sabbaticals accessible to more people. We now present a case study of this action research project, which answers the following questions. How does the concept of a virtual sabbatical fit holistically within the context of higher education? How can the aims of the sabbatical be fulfilled in a virtual context? What are the problems and successes of the virtual sabbatical?

Mathematicians and scientists have for a long time tried to understand why mathematics, a subjective creation of the human intellect, is so effective in the sciences, which study the objective, physical world. Satisfactory reasons have not been found because there has not been a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the subjective and the objective aspects of life. In this paper we will see that Maharishi's Vedic Science, by explaining the link between the subjective realm where mathematics is located and the objective world that science examines, can resolve this problem in a natural way. TRIANGLE CONGRUENCE High school geometry texts typically pose SAS, SSS and ASA as postulates. Here we postulate SAS and develop proofs for the other two.

A rigorous quasi-experiment tested the ameliorative effects of a sabbatical leave, a special case of respite from routine work. We hypothesized that (a) respite increases resource level and well-being and (b) individual differences and respite features moderate respite effects. A sample of 129 faculty members on sabbatical and 129 matched controls completed measures of resource gain, resource loss, and well-being before, during, and after the sabbatical. Among the sabbatees, resource loss declined and resource gain and well-being rose during the sabbatical. The comparison group showed no change. Moderation analysis revealed that those who reported higher respite self-efficacy and greater control, were more detached, had a more positive sabbatical experience, and spent their sabbatical outside their home country enjoyed more enhanced well-being than others.
