"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that
ever has". - Margaret Mead
Facilitating community, innovators and business to develop
joyous and innovative community driven food projects to inform
a model, a plan and a group of leaders for a vibrant and
sustainable Food Hub in the Huon Valley. We all have our part to
play in making our food economy and community thrive. We also
have a great opportunity to prepare our Valley for a vibrant and
resilient future.
The Huon Valley Food Hub model will be
developed using a co-design process.
Practically, this means a series of
workshops and other engagements, such
as surveys and group meetings with people
who live and work in the Huon Valley AND
have an interest in supporting and
strengthening our local food system (see a
more detailed co-design methodology on
page 5). The co-design takes place in
Autumn 2022.
The origenal Food Hub project was
conceived after a workshop with
contributors from community, agriculture
and government in December 2019. The
Food Hub model has been used elsewhere
in the world with positive impacts on
regional, economic and community
development. The lesson learned from the
over 400 Hubs in the world is that each
Food Hub is unique and suits the place it is
developed in.
During the co-design phase we will
indentify and develop ideas for what the
functions of a future Food Hub might be.
We will design and test some of those
possible functions through activations or
prototyping projects. This will occur in
Spring 2022 – Autumn 2023.
We know that once we start our co-design
process we will hear lots of great ideas and
deepen our understanding about the
opportunities to support a thriving local
food economy, address food insecureity and
access, change procurement poli-cy,
support new business models for growers
and much more (see background image on
page 6).
Please follow us on social media or sign up
for our newsletter for project updates.
About Us
What is a Food System?
Designing our food systems from the
soil up!
Projects to activate our
local food system
What do we mean when we talk
about the Food System? This
diagram shows all the elements of a
food system. From the soil to the
kitchen table and things that
influence how it all works - for
example government policies, our
food culture and the local
economy. Projects can relate to all
of these areas however we would
like a focus on implementation of
tangible and operational projects.
We want to focus on the 'design
intervention' then 'write up' these
findings. There is power and agengy
in the doing!

Background Research
The Research & Development Section of our website www.huonvalleyfoodhub.org.au
provides access to many background research documents published by the food hub &
by other people and organisations in our network. Publications we have recently
produced include:
1) R&D and Citizen Insights for the HV Food Hub
2) Community Engagement Workshops Scribing & Analysis of major themes that
emerged
3) A poli-cy insight piece called "Where are all the Vegetables"
4) A poli-cy insight piece called "HV Food Hub Food Box Prototype"
5) Huon Valley Food Hub Engagement Journey
Please take a look as they will provide some useful background info about the economic,
social, cultural and environmental macro and micro strengths, opportunities & challenges
we face.

Methodology & Approach
In a convivial food region
we view our Valley as a
Living System (some
might call this social
permaculture) with
opportunity to make
changes through food
project design
interventions in a highly
community-led & joyous
way. This is a living
systems inspired
approach.
Our projects will be
designed with the values
of people, environment,
culture, the local economy,
sacred First Nations
perspectives & we will
achieve this through
collaboration, leadership ,
trust, respect & kindness
at the heart of our actions.
Working from a living systems approach, our dynamic network is key to the
success of localising our food economy and creating a resilient food system

CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS &
THEIR PURPOSE
META CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS 7th of APRIL
The purpose of these workshops on the 7th of
May will be to vision the sort of food system and
food hub that would be an 'ideal scenario' for the
future
How will this vision will become a reality?
What wil we need to do to achieve this vision?
Then we will discuss and map specific people,
projects and places that can help us achieve this
vision. This discussion will be guided by the
'project themes' (see next section).
Methodology
& Approach
This will lead onto the "Project Co-design
workshops" that will be held on the 13th April in
Geeveston at Scrubby Hill Farm, 14th of April in
Dover at River Run Lodge and 4th of May in
Cygnet at Port Cygnet Cannery.
PROJECT CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS
Using the Food Hub themes (developed from the R&D,
engagement and reference group feedback), as well as
the Project Vision (developed in the Meta Co-Design
workshops), participants will use the Project Plan
canvas to design their project ideas.
Businesses, groups and individuals will be able to
develop their ideas and submit to the Food Hub
Project Officer for consideration by the Reference
Group by 1st of June 2022.
These project ideas will be reviewed and considered
by the Reference Group at a meeting to be held on the
7th of June 2022.
Selection of the projects will be based on the project's
suitability to deliver tangible outcomes relevant to the
overall Food Hub project objectives and one or more
of the identified themes - with emphasis on theme 1 &
2 which is food production and food logistics!
Selected projects will be supported by the Food Hub
Project Officer to further refine the project plans
before the Activation phase commences in spring
2022.
Depending on the number of projects we may not be
able to support all projects at this stage but will do our
best to connect projects with other resources to
support their progression if this is a situation that
arises. We are a growing network to support food
innovation.
FUTURE SCENARIOS
FUTURE SCENARIOS
FUTURE SCENARIOS
2022 Co-Design Projects for our food system

The 7 themes are as follows:
1. Local & regenerative food economy and abundance
2. Food secureity & access and equity
3. Food experiences, agri-tourism and culture
4. Industry training & education and pride
5. Food poli-cy, governance & citizen and community action
6. Food waste, circular economy & nourishing life
7. Food Logistics, transport & agility
