Editorial Reviews

Review

"A much needed primer on consent for kids and their adults...The text is straightforward but impactful... The cartoon art is set against pastel backgrounds, further adding to the unintimidating tone. Discussion questions conclude this necessary work." -- School Library Journal "https://www.slj.com/"

"Morrison provides a valuable service for children and their parents in her tale by showing how consent works and what good boundaries look like. The advice falls in line with today's parenting experts, who recommend that kids not be forced into unwanted touching; the volume also includes worthwhile discussion questions." -- Kirkus Reviews "https://www.kirkusreviews.com"

Not perfect, but just right.
This isn’t the end-all be-all Book of Answers when it comes to navigating the topic of consent with children. The art is kind of like those very dry info posters you see in a classroom, featuring diversity in several different ways. The scenario/plot is simple to understand and the dialogue is as well.I’ll also be honest in saying that I am extremely pleased to have found a book on consent and body autonomy with a young boy as the main character. Although any books reflecting this scenario with a young girl are equally as important—my son happens to be the main character in my life and I am so excited to begin teaching him how consent goes both ways, always. Some of the reviews are a bit harsh. I can’t imagine what some people’s level of expectations are for a little board book. The book isn’t perfect, but I love it. The price reflects it’s simplicity and I hope it’s one my son likes as he continues to find more interest in reading.

Got this book from a friend’s recommendation when her toddler yelled at mine, “Ask for consent!” as mine was trying to play wrestle the other kid. You should’ve seen my face.

I thought consent might be too advanced for my 3 year old, but maybe it’s just something that will take time and repetition to permeate his little brain.

The ideas are presented in a simple enough way that toddlers can start to understand and the discussion guide at the end for parents is great!

This is a book we read often when others or my kids violate personal space. Valuing education in consent is crucial. 1/4 are sexually violated. How many kids in the classroom is that?! So upsetting. I digress, this book plants the seed of consent and reinforces it. Also, worth buying and sending to family for visits so you avoid the awkwardness of having to tell them where you stand on forced hugs, kisses, cuddles and the sort. The illustrations are not my cup of tea. It’s like someone took a picture of a scene and outlined it in procreate then colored it in. It’s kind of awkward realism. Like the discomfort you feel when you watch the animated characters in The Polar Express. Maybe that’s suppose to make it more cognitively digestible?! Little bit of cringe for knowledge is worth it. 10/10 would buy for others!

We absolutely love this book and it’s a great intro to teach toddlers and young children about consent and the fact that they have autonomy over their own bodies. It’s very simple, but it keeps my daughter’s attention and is somehow one of her favorites. We’ve always maintained that our daughter does not have to hug or kiss anyone and even at 18 months, if a family member asks for a hug or kiss and she says no, they need to honor that. I really hope the author decides to make more books on similar topics!

My ONLY complaint is that the price is really steep for a very small board book. I’m hoping as this book is able to be prouduced in larger quantities, the price comes down. Fifteen bucks for five pages is a lot. I have no regrets about purchasing though.

Amazing book! I use this both as a parent and as a psychologist. This is an absolutely wonderful explanation of consent for kids. I appreciate that it depicts common situations for children; ironically often the most difficult in dysfunctional family systems. I also appreciate the various ethnicities, couple configurations, and physical abilities depicted. Very inclusive and beautifully direct.

...Except that last bit. Tickling? It’s controversial enough I feel it should be omitted. One could argue that true, affirmative consent is impossible in this situation. It’s also known sexual grooming and role dominance behavior. Not ok ever!

This is such a thoughtful and valuable book for kids AND adults, and obviously a lot of thought has gone into doing it right and teaching people to be respectful of each others' space. I can't imagine what a positive impact a book like this would have throughout kids' lives if they learn to treat each other with the care and awareness that this book teaches. I don't entirely agree with another reviewers' concerns about race in the book – it feels like the book was constructed with care and awareness on this front as described in the kickstarter, with multiple races represented on the cover and in the pages, as well as people with disabilities... it's one of the first things I noted when I opened the book. Strong recommend!

Got this for my son to help him understand consent. He is 4 1/2 and while I had talked to him about consent a few times I got the feeling that he wasn't truly grasping what it meant. This book had several examples of consent, all boiling down to the same conclusion, which is that you get to choose who touches you and in what manner. If you want a hug from Grandpa, that's fine, and if you dont want one, that's fine too! This book was super simple and to the point. Easy for a small child to grasp!

I really like this book although I bet my in-laws won't. I bought this to try and reverse how my toddler is being conditioned to always kiss family goodbye and I think the straightforward message will sink in through this book. It's also a handy small size so younger children can easily hold it.
