The Gospel of Matthew (Sacra Pagina Series, Vol 1) (Volume 1) Hardcover – December 1, 1991
Purchase options and add-ons
Matthew wrote his Gospel from his perspective as a Jew. It is with sensitivity to this perspective that Father Harrington undertakes this commentary on the Gospel of Matthew.
After an introduction, he provides a literal translation of each section in Matthew's Gospel and explains the textual problems, philological difficulties, and other matters in the notes. He then presents a literary analysis of each text (content, form, use of sources, structure), examines the text against its Jewish background, situates it in the context of Matthew's debate with other first-century Jews, and reflects on its significance for Christian theology and Christian-Jewish relations. Bibliographies direct the reader to other important modern studies.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2010I have used this for a year now and find it sufficient for lay teaching and up to date with current scholarship. It would be too simple for clergy or should be yet more than adequate for lay bible study groups and nihil obstat from a protestant point of view.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2007I have used this text numerous times in preparing sermons and to lead discussion groups. The author does an excellent job in presenting the background of the social climate surrounding Jesus and placing it into a context of our modern times. The detail of his intrepretation is excellent. Sometimes there is more technical detail than what the average person might use, but the information can be very helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2007Theological and academic analysis of the Gospel of Matthew. One of those vital and basic tools to have in your library for Scriptural inquiry, - to begin or to heighten understanding. But this one is useful across the board; that is, for preachers and academicians, students and professors.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2014A useful and insightful commentary, especially in looking at parallels, connections and background in the evangelist's social/religious context in 1st-century Judaism and the Roman empire. Sometimes it seems that his strong desire to find Matthew innocent of anti-Semitism leads him to interpretations that seem somewhat stretched. Also, by far his chief focus throughout the book is the Matthean community's concerns in its rivalry with other communities within 1st-century Judaism (as Harrington proposes it; other scholars disagree - both he and they make good points). Reading the book cover-to-cover, it often felt like just about every single pericope was reinforcing the same basic message: "This reflects the concerns of the Matthean community; they're not anti-Semites; it's a debate within Judaism not against it." This came at the expense of other theological/ethical themes in the passages, which I find more important, but to which he did not devote as much attention (sometimes none at all). For these we must turn to other commentaries.
