    From Aug. 6: A 60-year-old German man has become the seventh HIV-free individual after receiving a stem-cell transplant, becoming the second person to receive non-resistant stem cells.

    From Oct. 15: In a new study using the latest scanning technology, researchers identified distinct changes in the brainstem in people who were hospitalized with COVID-19. They also showed that the damage is more pronounced in those who experienced more severe disease.

    From Sept. 24: The U.S. FDA has approved FluMist nasal spray as the first influenza vaccine that can be self-administered at home. The vaccine, which contains a weakened form of the live influenza virus, is only available to individuals aged 18 and older.

    From Sept. 10: Pertussis cases in the U.S. have quadrupled this year, with 12,353 cases recorded as of late August. The CDC reports that cases dropped during the peak COVID-19 pandemic but have since spiked due to vaccine misinformation. Pertussis can strike both children and adults, especially vulnerable newborns.
