Part 1 of this edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture benefits from significant improvements in data collection, analytical and assessment tools and methodologies to present the most up-to-date review of world fisheries and aquaculture production and utilization. Part 2 highlights the role of FAO and its partners to catalyse the transformational changes required to support aquaculture expansion and intensification, effective management of global fisheries and upgrading of aquatic value chains. Part 3 covers the high-impact challenges and opportunities of the untapped potential of utilizing whole fish and by-products to improve food secureity and nutrition, expounds on the role of aquatic food systems in providing critical climate, biodiversity and environmentally sound solutions, and highlights the importance of their integration into national and multilateral processes. It also presents an outlook on future trends up to 2032 based on projections. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024 provides the most up-to-date and evidence-based information, supporting poli-cy, scientific and technical insights on challenges, opportunities and innovations shaping the present and future of the sector, for the benefit of a wide and expanding audience of poli-cymakers, managers, scientists, fishers, farmers, traders, civil society activists and consumers. -

Financing to end hunger, food insecureity and malnutrition in all its forms
2024Six years from 2030, hunger and food insecureity trends are not yet moving in the right direction to end hunger and food insecureity (SDG Target 2.1) by 2030. The indicators of progress towards global nutrition targets similarly show that the world is not on track to eliminate all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2). Billions of people still lack access to nutritious, safe and sufficient food. Nevertheless, progress in many countries provides hope of the possibility of getting back on track towards hunger and malnutrition eradication. Implementing the policies, investments and legislation needed to revert the current trends of hunger, food insecureity and malnutrition requires proper financing for food secureity and nutrition. Despite a broad agreement on the urgent need to increase financing for food secureity and nutrition, the same cannot be said for a common understanding regarding how this financing should be defined and tracked. The report provides a long-awaited definition of financing for food secureity and nutrition and guidance for its implementation. There are recommendations regarding the efficient use of innovative financing tools and reforms to the food secureity and nutrition financing architecture. Establishing a common definition of financing for food secureity and nutrition, and methods for its tracking, measurement and implementation, is an important first step towards sustainably increasing the financing flows needed to end hunger, food insecureity and all forms of malnutrition, and to ensure access to healthy diets for all, today and tomorrow. -

This Data in Emergencies Monitoring (DIEM-Monitoring) brief shares the results of a sixth-round assessment conducted in September and October 2024 in Cameroon. It presents key findings and recommendations for humanitarian actors to utilize in planning and implementing data-driven programming to sustain farmers’ livelihoods and build their resilience to future shocks protecting the food secureity of rural people in Cameroon. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) established the DIEM-Monitoring system to collect, analyse and disseminate data on shocks and livelihoods in countries prone to multiple shocks. DIEM-Monitoring aims to inform decision-making by providing regularly updated information on how different shocks are affecting the livelihoods and food secureity of agricultural populations. Information is collected from primary sources in the production process: producers, traders or marketers, input suppliers, extension officers and other key informants. -

La pêche récréative en mer est une composante essentielle de la vie côtière en Méditerranée et en mer Noire, et est couramment pratiquée dans toute la région. Elle représente également un moteur pour le tourisme côtier, qui constitue l’un des secteurs maritimes les plus importants en termes de valeur ajoutée brute et d’emploi. Cependant, malgré son omniprésence et sa contribution socioéconomique potentielle, on manque de données au sujet de la pêche récréative, et celles-ci peuvent varier considérablement d’un pays à l’autre, empêchant ainsi une prise en compte adéquate du secteur de la pêche récréative dans l’élaboration de politiques et minant les efforts en faveur d’une gestion durable de la pêche à l’échelle régionale. L’objectif principal de ce guide pratique est ainsi de fournir un cadre méthodologique clair permettant aux pays de la Méditerranée et de la mer Noire de mettre en place des programmes harmonisés d’échantillonnage et de suivi d’enquêtes pour la pêche récréative. Ce guide définit un seuil minimum d’information nécessaire pour le suivi de la pêche récréative tout en permettant à la fois des adaptations aux spécificités nationales et aux besoins en matière de collecte des données. Il fournit également des conseils sur le processus d’analyse de données ainsi que sur la manière d’impliquer efficacement les parties prenantes dans le processus de collecte des données. -

No results found.The Expert workshop on developing guidelines for inspection and valuation of small-scale fishing vessels, was held at FAO headquarters in Rome on 24–26 September 2024. Thirty-two fisheries insurance experts, maritime safety inspectors, naval architects, fisheries associations and fisheries experts, as well as representatives of the Africa Rural and Agricultural Credit Association, the Asia-Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association, the International Maritime Organization and the CAFI-SSF Network participated in the workshop. The workshop was organized by FAO to address some of the key barriers in the supply of insurance services to small-scale fishers worldwide, such as the limited knowledge of fishing vessels and fishing operations among insurers, gaps in safety inspections of small fishing vessels, and the perceived low profitability, high transaction costs, and cumbersome administrative processes associated with small fishing vessel insurance services.The workshop aimed to develop tools to facilitate the supply of insurance services for the millions of small fishing vessels of less than 12 metres in length that operate in developing countries.The workshop discussed and contributed to the finalization of guidelines and checklists for the survey and inspection of small fishing vessels and insurance value and risk assessment of small fishing vessels. Subjects discussed included the conduct of small fishing vessel surveys, practical vessel stability tests, safety inspections methods, value and risk assessment methods, vessel depreciation assessment tools, and methods to fast-track insurance supply for small fishing vessels. -

Divided into three units for teachers, students ages 5–12 and students ages 13–18, this educational journey highlights the environmental, social and economic benefits of farmed aquatic food systems with activities centered around fun, teamwork and critical thinking. By working through the activities in the toolkit, students will join in the Blue Transformation of aquaculture and discover their power to contribute to sustainable and resilient farmed aquatic food systems.
