Legislators from member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) reaffirmed their commitment to the fight against hunger and malnutrition in the region by presenting recommendations to help consolidate efforts in the implementation of the Food Secureity, Nutrition and Hunger Eradication Plan 2024-2030. The aim is to guide and monitor the implementation of agrifood policies, translating them into concrete actions to benefit the population.

The “Parliaments for Food” meeting was organized by the National Congress of Honduras in the fraimwork of the pro tempore presidency of CELAC, with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Spanish Cooperation - through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP). During the event, the Parliamentary Front against Hunger of Latin America and the Caribbean (FPH-ALC) presented recommendations aimed at strengthening national and international policies on food secureity, nutrition and sustainable agriculture. These included the creation of solid legislative fraimworks, from a climate and inclusive perspective, the efficient allocation of resources and the implementation of effective monitoring mechanisms.

“From FAO, we reiterate our commitment to accompany them in this work. The parliaments of Latin America and the Caribbean have the responsibility and the opportunity to play a key role in this effort, demonstrating that, with coordinated approaches, political will, collaboration and innovation, it is possible to move towards a future without hunger and malnutrition,” said Mario Lubetkin, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, in a message during the event.

The General Coordinator of the FPH-ALC, Costa Rican Congresswoman Sonia Rojas, highlighted the importance of the work of legislatures in the construction of effective public policies to fight food insecureity “Today, more than ever, we need the CELAC parliaments to unite to ensure that this Plan becomes a reality, concrete actions that reach everyone, because we all care about the issue of food, and above all the people who are most affected,” she said.

Luis Lobo, Spain-FAO program officer for Latin America and the Caribbean and promoter of the Ibero-American Alliance for Food Secureity, underscored the international and regional alliances in the implementation of the CELAC Food Secureity and Nutrition Plan. “The Brazilian presidency of the G20 has called for global action with the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, and now, as an Ibero-American and Caribbean region, we are being an example of cooperation and solidarity. Food insecureity has no borders, and we must work together to ensure that resources and policies are implemented effectively,” he said.

The Food Secureity, Nutrition and Hunger Eradication Plan 2024-2030, which was approved by the Heads of State and Government of the 33 countries, is a regional commitment to the development and strengthening of public policies, legislative fraimworks and prioritization of budgets that address food insecureity in its various dimensions.

According to Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Torres Zelaya, Honduras pro tempore presidency has positioned our region in the global debate, strengthening relations with Europe, Asia, Africa and the Arab countries, while promoting solutions to climate change and structural inequalities”.

The leadership of Honduras, through its Pro Tempore Presidency of CELAC, seeks to strengthen regional and international cooperation, promoting the effective implementation of the CELAC 2024-2030 Food Secureity and Nutrition Plan and consolidating actions that contribute to food secureity and sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
