The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a subprogramme to establish a Global Network of Digital Agriculture Innovation Hubs. This network of in-country innovation hubs established by the FAO and country institutions, will support farmers and value chain actors, especially youth and women, to increase their competitiveness by accelerating the development and uptake of digital innovations.
The subprogramme is fully funded by the Flexible Voluntary Contribution Mechanism (FVC), FAO's primary less-earmarked voluntary pool funding FVC has shown to be instrumental in its ability to act as a seed fund and catalyst for testing impacts and scaling up innovative development initiatives around the world.
The FVC subprogramme started in Dominica, Grenada, Ethiopia and Morocco, and each country is scoping its Digital Agriculture Innovation Hub taking into account its national priorities, the country's digital maturity and the capacities of its partners (academia, NGOs or civil society).
The objective of the hubs is to facilitate the mainstreaming of digital innovations in agriculture and contribute to the digital transformation of agrifood systems. At the same time, they aim to increase productivity, manage climate risks and diversify rural economies in a sustainable economic, social and environmental manner.
