The FCC’s vision is to promote innovation, investment, competition and consumer empowerment for the communications platforms of today and the future -- maximizing the power of communications technology to expand our economy, create jobs, enhance U.S. competitiveness and unleash broad opportunity for all Americans.

Digital strategy is foremost in our minds as we execute this vision. At the FCC, we strive to open our data assets for increased consumption and usability. A core concept in our digital strategy is openness and transparency in data-driven decisions. We have led the way in publishing open Application Programming Interfaces, bulk data downloads and data visualizations.

The FCC’s Strategic Plan clearly articulates our goals of openness and transparency, furthering the innovation economy and meeting more global government wide digital strategies.

Federal Digital Strategy

On May 23, 2012, President Obama released a Memorandum calling for all government agencies to "identify ways to use innovative technologies to streamline their delivery of services to lower costs, decrease service delivery times, and improve the customer experience." In response to this directive, the Federal CIO released a strategy entitled "Digital Government: Building a 21st Century Platform to Better Serve the American People", which provides the general public and our government workforce with access to government information and services on demand and on any device. The Digital Government Strategy has three main goals:

  • Enable the American people and an increasingly mobile workforce to access high-quality digital government information and services anywhere, anytime, and on any device.
  • Ensure that as the government adjusts to this new digital world, we seize the opportunity to procure and manage devices, applications and data in smart, secure and affordable ways.
  • Unlock the power of government data to spur innovation across our nation and improve the quality of services for the American people.

Ultimately, the Federal Digital Strategy aims to enable more efficient and coordinated delivery of digital information across the federal space.

In specific response to the May 23 Presidential Memorandum, the FCC has taken the following approach:

  • We have used this resource to track our progress in the specific tasks outlined in the Memorandum. Using this resource means there is a standard process that OMB can use to track every dot-gov’s progress towards meeting the goals of the Digital Strategy.
  • Further, we have developed a Digital Strategy Drupal module to help all agencies serve up the standard tagged progress report. Implementing this module provides a systematic approach to publishing Digital Strategy progress across government. The module is currently is use providing our progress report in the various formats:
  • We have also posted our progress on github.
