NOAA GLERL’s fieldwork in Lake Erie focuses on observing the size, movement, and toxicity of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Weekly field data is collected at eight sampling sites across Western Lake Erie, and data is collected continuously with buoys throughout the season as well. This work helps us to quantify the influence of nutrients on HAB growth and toxicity, which supports NOAA in providing critical information to regional stakeholders via the Lake Erie HAB Forecast and the Experimental Lake Erie HAB Tracker tool. NOAA GLERL also provides weekly data on microcystins (algal toxins) from June through October to stakeholders, including drinking water managers, who rely on this information for water management decisions. We conduct similar monitoring in Saginaw Bay to develop HAB forecasting capabilities in this large embayment of Lake Huron.
