Before Alabama's mascot Big Al had an official, full-body costume or even a nickname, student Melford Espey Jr. created an elephant head and wore it on the sidelines in the 1960s. This is from a 1964 Iron Bowl. It looks as if he is holding a fowl, likely a reference to "War Chicken," a common joke Alabama fans make about Auburn's "War Eagle" battle cry. Date unknown.
