The term 'Oxford bags' was coined by a small group of students from Oxford University that wore ridiculously wide legged pants. These pants were adopted for their functionality which allowed students to quickly put them on over their knickers when going to class from recreational activities. The Oxford bag style spread to Ivy League colleges all over the U.S.
