All birds can be traced back to dinosaurs, and many have retained traits, like extra claws and pouched beaks, of the dinosaurs they evolved from.

Some sites list just 5 ugly African animals, but there are (many) more. My picks for the ugliest animals in Africa are: warthogs, hyenas, vultures (2 types), okapi, wildebeests, buffalo, and aardvarks.

With golden plumage, a tiny beak obscured by fluff and huge round eyes, the great eared nightjar looks like a plump little dragon hatchling.
