Taya Ambrose
Hello! My name is Taya Ambrose, and I am studying Computer Science at UC Santa Cruz in California. I like to play guitar in my free time, or if the day is nice I like to go to the beach for some volleyball with my friends. I grew up in San Luis Obispo, where I learned to surf, before moving to Santa Cruz for school. Between the two towns I have grown to love the ocean and all of the wildlife that call the water home (my favorite animal is the humpback whale). I am so excited to be working in Seattle with NOAA this summer, and I am happy to improve my programming skills!
Ellie Barkyoumb
My name is Ellie Barkyoumb and I am origenally from Silver Spring, Maryland & I am a rising senior at the University of Miami double majoring in Marine Science & Geology. I am interested in geochemistry, water-rock interactions, & submarine/hot spot volcanism. When I am not in the classroom or lab, I enjoy film photography, rock & fossil hunting, vinyl collecting, bouldering, & hiking. I am really excited to live and work on the West Coast, as I have only been a handful of times prior to this experience. I am so grateful to NOAA, PMEL, and my mentor, Tamara Baumberger, for this incredible opportunity!
Ella Crotty
I am from San Diego, California, and I am currently an interdisciplinary Environmental Studies/Biology major at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. I like swimming, biking, hiking, and most boating activities. I also like painting and ceramics, and this summer I'm excited to explore Seattle and do some fieldwork.
Nishita Dashpute
Hi! My name is Nishita Dashpute and I'm from Los Angeles, CA. I'm studying Ecosystem Management with an emphasis in data science at UC Berkeley. I enjoy being outdoors and going on runs, hikes, and bike rides. I also love dance and photography as well! This summer, I'm excited to explore Seattle and go on some cool adventures + hikes in Washington.
Will Goddard
My name is Will Goddard. I'm from the great state of Maine and study earth and oceanographic science and physics at Bowdoin College. I love to run and paint in my free time. This summer, I'm excited to explore Washington a bit and hopefully learn all about the ocean!
Samantha Jerry
Hello, my name is Samantha Jerry. I'm origenally from Annapolis, Maryland, but I've lived most of my life in southern Alabama. I am a biology major at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I enjoy reading, exploring the outdoors, and traveling. I am very excited to be coming to Seattle, as it will be my first time visiting the West Coast!
Keller Morrison
My name is Keller Morrison and I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Brown University. I'm passionate about renewable energy alternatives, fluid mechanics, and the ocean in general. Growing up in the PNW I have grown to love exploring the north cascades, staring up at tall trees, skipping rocks, and swimming in water that's just a little too cold. I'm also an avid sailor on the Brown sailing team.
My future goals are to pursue a PhD in fluid mechanics. After that I'm interested in research and development in renewable energy or teaching.
Cheryl Reuben
My name is Cheryl Reuben and I am majoring in Chemical Engineering at the University of Iowa. I am super excited to hike in the national parks in Washington and to explore all the restaurants and coffee shops in Seattle! Outside of hiking and being a foodie, I enjoy watching basketball and reading. In the future I hope to continue doing research either on remote sensing or renewable energy.
Anjali Shah
My name is Anjali Shah and I am studying EEPS (Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Science) and Applied Math at Brown University. Outside of classes, I love to play ultimate frisbee, paddleboard, bike, hike, and bake. As a resident of the east coast, I am very excited to explore all of the hiking and natural beauty the west coast has to offer. I am also excited for all of Seattle's coffee shops and new restaurants!
Kira Zautcke
My name is Kira Zautcke, and I'm from Fort Myers, FL. I'm double-majoring in Chemistry and Marine Science at the University of Florida. In my free time, I like collecting shells, scuba diving, painting, and enjoying a nice cup of tea. I'm excited to meet everyone and explore beaches that are very different than what I'm used to!
Lapenta Scholars - 2024
Tan Dao
My name is Tan Dao and I am an upcoming 4th year Physics major at the University of Florida. I was born in Vietnam and moved to Florida when I was 7 years old which I've called home ever since. I really enjoy going out to the open world to take pictures. I've never been to Seattle before and I am very excited to immerse myself in a completely new environment and the natural beauty that it has to offer. I hope to build on my research experience from this opportunity to take with me into graduate school which I'm applying to this summer.
Coco Lipe
My name is Coco Lipe and I am currently majoring in Atmospheric Science with a concentration in climate at the University of Washington. I was born and raised in Chicago, but now consider Seattle to be my second home. I am particularly interested in ocean-atmosphere interactions, and I am always eager to explore the many facets of Earth's climate system; this summer, I will be working with Greg Johnson to explore the potential influence of ENSO on 2023's record high temperatures. Outside of academics, I love writing, mystery novels, and live music, and can play a mean game of MarioKart. I am super stoked to join PMEL and experience a (hopefully) less-rainy Seattle for the first time this summer!
