The Graduate Certificate in Developmental Disabilities prepares professionals from a broad range of disciplines to provide services and supports for people with developmental disabilities and their families. This program is housed in the University of Kentucky’s Human Development Institute. Coursework emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach. Students have the opportunity to conduct a research project, participate in a practicum, and work with individuals with developmental disabilities along with the individual’s family, to gain invaluable field experience. Individuals with disabilities, family members of individuals with disabilities, and professionals serving this population are encouraged to apply. Applicants do not need to be concurrently enrolled in a graduate degree program as long as they meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate School.

Admission Requirements 

  • Admission to the UK Graduate School 
  • A scholarly writing sample 
  • A 500-word personal statement 
  • Current resume/vita 
  • If not currently attending UK: two letters of recommendation 
  • Completed Graduate Certificate Application 

To apply, you will need:  
(1) a scholarly writing sample  
(2) a 500-word personal statement indicating why you want to attain this certificate 
(3) current resume/vita 
(4) if not currently attending UK: two letters of recommendation, and  
(5) completed Graduate Certificate Application.

Course Requirements 

HDI 600 - Interdisciplinary Approaches (2 credit hours)

HDI 602 - Interdisciplinary Supports (2 credit hours)

HDI 603 - Practicum (2 credit hours)

HDI 604 - Interdisciplinary Leadership Seminar (2 credit hours)

One elective: HDI 601, HDI 605, or approved outside course 


Application Deadlines

Fall: July 22

Summer: December 9

Spring: April 15

Applicants must meet the Graduate School admission requirements.
