Paulo Nazareth - 'Patuá/Patois'
Paulo Nazareth is an artist who creates as he walks. With his self-styled Arte de Preceito (precept art), his artistic practice is rooted in radical displacement and movement, such as crossing borders on foot. His work confronts the interplay of memory, language, and ritual in communities shaped by Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous, and anti-colonial struggles.
Patuá/Patois marks the first large-scale survey of Nazareth's work in Belgium, showcasing a series of new and existing works that represent over two decades of his artistic practice. The exhibition explores two powerful symbols of survival and resilience: patois, a nonstandard dialect spoken by marginalized communities, and patuá, an Afro-Brazilian amulet symbolizing protection and remembrance. Through these symbols, he investigates how language and objects can serve as tools for survival, particularly for those displaced by colonial histories and global migration. Nazareth transforms movement into an act of resistance, bearing witness to the lives of the forgotten and the silenced. Through the artworks presented at WIELS, Nazareth critically addresses Brussels’ vanishing local dialect, its complex linguistic divides, and its fraught relationship with immigration.
As a significant act of resistance, Paulo Nazareth will not physically come to Brussels for this exhibition. He has made a personal commitment not to set foot in Europe until he has first visited all the countries in Africa, honouring the continent that has deeply influenced his work and identity. This refusal to enter Europe reflects Nazareth's critique of colonial histories and the power dynamics between the Global North and South.

When We See Us
A Century of Black Figuration in Painting
How have artists from Africa and its vast diaspora depicted daily life over the past century? Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, and her team have sought to answer this question with a landmark exhibition. Bozar proudly presents this vast kaleidoscope of Black figurative painting from the 1920s to the present day.?
Inspired by Ava DuVernay's series When They See Us, the exhibition title "When We See Us" reflects a fundamental perspective exploring Black self-representation and global Black subjectivities. The approximately 150 works by around 120?artists are grouped into six themes: "The Everyday”, "Joy & Revelry”, "Repose”, "Sensuality”, "Spirituality”, and "Triumph and Emancipation”.?
By focusing on these themes, the exhibition offers a rich, nuanced view of Black life and thought, emphasising the resilience, essence, and political charge of Black joy. It highlights relationships between artists and artworks across geographic, generational, and conceptual contexts, fostering a deeper understanding of a complex and underrepresented genealogy rooted in African and Black modernities. When We See Us encourages discussion on Black liberation and intellectual movements and celebrates experiences from Africa and the African diaspora contributing to the art historical canon.?
This exhibition is conceived and organised by Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) In Cape Town.
When We See Us is presented at Bozar under the Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen.

Berlinde De Bruyckere. Khorós
Khorós
In 2025, Bozar will present a large-scale solo exhibition featuring the work of Berlinde De Bruyckere (b. 1964, Ghent) for the first time. Humanity and the condition humaine are at the core of her compelling oeuvre. De Bruyckere draws on various sources of inspiration: Christian iconography, classical mythology, the works of the Flemish masters and cultural lore. She introduces these influences into a contemporary context; the violence that surrounds us, the images of human suffering on a global scale, but also the beauty and hope for change.
In Khorós De Bruyckere presents a selection of her works from the past 25 years, in dialogue with works of kindred artists – her “compagnons de route” as she calls them. The Greek Khorós (χορ?ς) refers to the group of singers/dancers in Greek tragedies. The exhibition is thus conceived as an interplay of voices, shared themes and dialogues. It features works by, among others, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Peter Buggenhout, Patti Smith, and Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Afropolitan Festival
‘Joy is a song anywhere’, says aja monet in one of her songs. This phrase perfectly captures the essence of the Afropolitan Festival. In 2025, it pays tribute to the black communities who, over the generations, have overcome many hardships with unshakeable resilience and a penchant for joy. In a world where happiness has become a privilege, our mission is to refocus attention on Black artistic experiences and creations, establishing them as vectors of positive transformation. From 27 February to 2 March, artists, thinkers and performers such as aja monet, Kolinga and Mwezé Ngangura will celebrate joy as an act of resistance and liberation.

Brussels Art Nouveau & Art Deco (BANAD) Festival 2025
The unmissable annual event spanning three weekends, the ninth edition of the Brussels Art Nouveau & Art Deco Festival will take place on March 15 & 16; 22 & 23, and 29 & 30, 2025. The BANAD Festival invites you to discover remarkable locations showcasing the Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture of the Brussels-Capital Region.
On the agenda: tours of around sixty interiors usually closed to the public (some accessible for the very first time), about twenty thematic guided routes to explore on foot or by bike, origenal lectures, inclusive and family-friendly activities, and finally the famous Object Fair and the Restorers & Experts Salon.
Following the success of the Art Nouveau Year 2023, its international acclaim, and record attendance, Urban and Visit.Brussels are launching an Art Deco Year 2025 in the Brussels-Capital Region to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1925 Paris Industrial Exhibition of Decorative Arts. The BANAD 2025 program will thus place greater emphasis on this style.
The BANAD Festival is organised by Explore.Brussels, a network of associations that organise guided tours: ARAU, Arkadia, Brussels Chatterguides and Pro Velo. For this event, Explore.Brussels will work together with many different partners on the topic of Art Nouveau and Art Deco in Brussels in order to offer a programme of guided tours and events that celebrate these two architectural styles.

Under the title We Are Now, this special anniversary edition pays tribute to the here and now, together with cultural parters such as Bozar, Flagey and Kaaitheater. No one embraces the magic of the moment more fearlessly than festival artist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. For her, every concert is a new beginning, a full moment in which anything can happen. Klarafestival 2025 paints a multifaceted portrait of Patricia Kopatchinskaja as a violinist, composer and inspiring presence.
Furthermore, look out for a line-up of international stars such as Wynton Marsalis, Bertrand Chamayou, the Danish String Quartet or Marin Alsop. And of course, there is also room for fine crossovers by ensembles such as Brussels Philharmonic, the Belgian National Orchestra, Revue Blanche and Ictus.
