Last Map Update: Fri, Jan 10, 2025 at 2:08:54 pm EST

A significant winter storm will impact the area this morning into Saturday morning. A winter storm warning is active for the whole area. Heavy snow of 4-6" is likely outside of the red outlined area on the map (southeastern TN counties, Cherokee County NC, and foothills of the East TN mountains). Heavier snow on top of the Smoky Mountains is likely. Wintry mix is a concern for the southernmost counties, and downslope warming the surface temperatures is a concern for the East TN foothills. Flurries for portions of the area are likely on Saturday.
Snow is expected to spread into the area from southwest to northeast through Friday morning and early afternoon, and continue into Friday evening. Significant travel impacts are likely during the Friday morning commute in Chattanooga, and during the evening commute across the entire area from winter weather impacts. Travel commutes are likely to persist through at least Saturday, depending on the roads and location.
Potential for wintry mix is highest across the southern TN counties into southwest North Carolina where a glaze of ice or sleet is possible during the height of the storm with a low potential of freezing drizzle as the storm comes to an end Saturday morning.
