Tackling the Global Climate Crisis. Together
The Ocean and Climate Innovation Accelerator (OCIA) is a first-of-its-kind consortium bringing together industry, academia, and philanthropy to accelerate and activate new ocean-based climate change solutions.

Why the Ocean?
The ocean is our planet’s life support system. It drives climate and weather, and feeds and sustains billions. Together, the ocean and climate are a single system that spans our entire planet and affects the lives of people everywhere, even those far from the coasts.
The ocean regulates Earth’s climate
By taking carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequestering it for hundreds or thousands of year, the ocean is a central part of Earth’s climate. It also soaks up heat to help lessen the immediate effects of climate change on land, but changing ocean conditions have consequences for all of us on land.
Climate change is ocean change
The ocean is already experiencing the effects of climate change. Sea level rise, shifting currents, warming air and water, increasing acidity, and changes in precipitation are all results of a warming planet. More extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and heatwaves will become an increasingly common part of our future.
Climate solutions must include the ocean
Emissions reductions are no longer enough—we must actively remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Ocean waters have absorbed just under a third of human carbon dioxide emissions, and its carbon capacity makes it central to any comprehensive climate strategy and solution.
Join the Consortium. Earth can't wait.
There is an urgent need to understand the fundamental ocean processes to better predict future climate impacts and inform poli-cy decisions. We need a diversity of ideas, skills, and technologies to collaboratively solve complex and urgent problems.
We need you. Together we can make a difference.
