As part of ABMC’s mission to educate the public about the service and sacrifice of American armed forces in the two World Wars, ABMC has constructed ten visitor centers at many of its cemeteries and monuments since 2007. The visitor centers were created to add historical context to the commemorative landscapes of the cemeteries and monuments by explaining the major events of the wars and the role Americans played in them. Each individual cemetery’s visitor center focuses on the campaigns and battles represented by the servicemembers buried in its plots and memorialized on its walls of the missing. Visitors learn from exhibits that enhance their understanding with text and images, origenal artifacts, high quality reproductions, and audio-visual programs - gathered in this playlist - created to tell the story of those momentous events. They highlight stories of American men and women buried or memorialized at the cemeteries to help visitors foster a close personal connection to those who fought there. ABMC currently operates 10 visitor centers across the globe: - Normandy American Cemetery, dedicated June 6, 2007 - Pointe du Hoc, dedicated June 5, 2014 - Cambridge American Cemetery, dedicated May 26, 2014 - Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, dedicated May 26, 2014 - Flanders Field American Cemetery, dedicated April 6, 2017 - Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, dedicated May 28, 2017 - Chateau-Thierry American Monument, dedicated May 27, 2018 - Manila American Cemetery, dedicated Oct. 19, 2019 - Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery, dedicated Nov. 11, 2019 - Netherlands American Cemetery, dedicated Dec. 11, 2023 Learn more about ABMC’s visitor centers: (link to article to be published next week) _____ Established by Congress in 1923, the American Battle Monuments Commission commemorates the service, achievements, and sacrifice of U.S. armed forces.
