Internships

SIParCS internships | CODE intern | Alumni

CISL provides students, educators, and the public with learning experiences and educational tools that teach about the importance of high-performance computing (HPC) in answering questions about our world. Learning opportunities for interns, like those described below, also help diversify our science community while making HPC accessible and fun.

As part of our goal of making a long-term, positive impact on the quality and diversity of the HPC workforce, the SIParCS program welcomes and encourages applications from students who are pursuing their first professional internship. As many CISL staff can attest, the path to an HPC career can follow many twists and turns. Be sure to tell us in your resume and personal statement how all of your work, school, and life experiences have prepared you for taking on a SIParCS project.

SIParCS technical internships

Summer Internships in Parallel Computational Science (SIParCS) embed students in CISL to provide them with significant hands-on experience in high-performance computing and related fields that use HPC for scientific discovery and modeling.

SIParCS (pronounced sigh-parks) is for university students who are interested in pursuing careers in such areas as:

  • Application Optimization
  • Data Science
  • Machine Learning
  • Numerical Methods
  • Software Engineering
  • Supercomputing Systems Operations
  • Visualization

See the SIParCS technical projects page for more details.

SIParCS interns worked primarily on-site in Boulder, Colorado, in a hybrid setting in 2024, engaging with mentors throughout CISL on dozens of technical projects. Their final presentations are available here along with others from previous years.

Outreach, diversity, and education

The CISL Outreach, Diversity, and Education (CODE) team also provides an internship opportunity for graduate students in student affairs, higher education, or related programs. The CODE Intern provides administrative support to the SIParCS Program office and affiliated programs, assisting with planning of education and outreach programs.

See this page for details.
