----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tue Dec 15 18:09:29 GMT 1998 Year: 98 Doy: 349 Observer: yasukawa WEATHER COMMENT: Tue Dec 15 18:09:43 GMT 1998 Warm, clear, no wind. MKIV COMMENT: Tue Dec 15 18:10:00 GMT 1998 System just started up, Kitty and I were troubleshooting /local/e disk drive. Started CHIP at around 1723 UT--automatic logging has not been writing to logs as nahenahe was involved in troubleshoot. PICS did not initialize properly and I was trying to type in Cancel commands with one hand between troublleshoot tasks. I will start PICS up soon. We determined that the drive is not working. I removed it from the system, re cabled to tape drive, and we edited out local/e from /etc/vfstab file so the system won't look for it for now. I will ship faulty drive back to Boulder and CSMT will locate a replacement, format and partition it and ship it out to us. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue Dec 15 18:20:39 GMT 1998 LOWL time and date OK. It was OK each time I checked it yesterday and this morning. **PSPT PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 15 18:21:25 GMT 1998 PSPT stalled initializing focus. Stopped program and went thru focus stall recovery routine from PC (it is outlined in our log notebook). Restarting PSPT. **MKIV PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 15 18:26:32 GMT 1998 MKIII OK, MKIV writing streaks to KCC display. Streaks are not at random azimuths like first scan of the day. There must be a timing problem between the modulator and the transformation board. Tue Dec 15 18:35:14 GMT 1998 MKIII Start Cal **MKIV PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 15 18:37:19 GMT 1998 I can see the streaks writing somewhat linearly, but backing up over a previous streak as it scans around. **MKIV PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 15 18:44:25 GMT 1998 Listened to 1/2-wave plate motor and drivetrain, no unusual sounds or indications that there is binding or a bad bearing. P+S signal at monitor looks stable. Tue Dec 15 18:55:25 GMT 1998 MKIII Start Patrol **MKIV PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 15 18:59:59 GMT 1998 Stopping to try resetting KCC. Second scan looks good. No streaks, coronal image. I will repeat calibration in case that got screwed up. Running Video mode on disc and changing exposures. **PICS PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 15 19:47:33 GMT 1998 Camera image is blinking between a "nominal" exposure and a underexposed one, it doesn't go dark completely between displays. I can see what looks like partial nominal/underexp images occasionally, like a leaf shutter is caught partially in the image. I haven't seen a recurrence since doing the tests. **** EVENT COMMENT ****: Tue Dec 15 20:34:19 GMT 1998 AP at PA 225-245 has receded back to the limb, not sure whether it erupted or not. Limb and k-corona images on display window have been centered well and not split vertically.
