----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tue Dec 26 17:08:16 GMT 2000 Year: 00 Doy: 361 Observer: yasukawa WEATHER COMMENT: Tue Dec 26 17:08:31 GMT 2000 Cold, clear, south wind. **MKIV PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 17:08:45 GMT 2000 nahenahe found rebooted this morning. COMMENT: Tue Dec 26 17:20:23 GMT 2000 Sky tx/guider AGC almost clear of dome wall. Waiting for it to clear before starting up. Tue Dec 26 18:02:19 GMT 2000 PICS Flat **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 18:02:46 GMT 2000 Restarting echo, MOF1 and MOF2 turned off (set to 25), QWP turned off. Removing optics bay cover to inspect QWP. Tue Dec 26 18:05:53 GMT 2000 PICS End Flat **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 18:36:08 GMT 2000 QWP large gear can be rotated when holding geneva side down. Gear is not real loose, but it is turnable with a bit of torque. Waiting for MOF1 to reach temperature and I will attempt to adjust the gear alignment. **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 19:37:39 GMT 2000 Not getting any image on monitor. Trying a Start rather than restart to see if that works better. **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 19:44:28 GMT 2000 Light level is 22.368. Obs type = Velocity, not changing. Maybe there is a crash involved. **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 19:57:16 GMT 2000 Quit and restarted program. Still getting no image. Queried Boulder echo crew, Jonathan is on vacation until 28th. Forwarded message to Greg. Original message was cc'd to kvs and tomczyk also, no response yet. GONG COMMENT: Tue Dec 26 21:10:46 GMT 2000 Back from GONG. Had to deal with Exabyte problems besides the usual PM. **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 21:11:25 GMT 2000 No response from anyone in Boulder regarding loss of image. Buttoning ECHO back up and shutting it down until someone gets back from vacation. **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 21:22:25 GMT 2000 With dark cloth off, light level = 26.334, image screen white. **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 21:38:00 GMT 2000 Light level = 21.609 with cover on. Dark cloth must not have squelched enough scattered light. Images are back on screen. I will need to darken optical bench some more in order to adjust QWP. I will bring up more darkening material, maybe trashbags under or over dark cloth might help. Decided to leave ECHO powered up and on. Darryl can try darkening light path with cloth/trashbags or cardboard and attempt alignment of QWP tomorrow. **ECHO PROBLEM**: Tue Dec 26 21:55:47 GMT 2000 Another solution to darkening optical path is to prop cover up at back end and adjust QWP by iterating between gear positions then placing cover back while checking results on remote monitor.
