UCAR CURRENTS

OCTOBER 2024

NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES

Dear UCAR Community,

The Annual UCAR Members Meeting is next week in Boulder, and I look forward to this event each year. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to connect with peers from around the university community, learn about ongoing research, and share new ideas. Most importantly, this event brings us together to understand the needs of the university community and better attune NSF NCAR and UCAR to those needs, which is so rejuvenating and valuable.

Sincerely,
Antonio Busalacchi
UCAR President

Starting this month: HPC Generative AI workshops

Part of the NSF NCAR Computational and Information Systems Lab (CISL), the NCAR HPC User Group (NHUG) is excited to host the Generative AI in Scientific Software and Coding Workshop Series on integrating generative AI in coding, running from October to January. While the rest of the sessions are TBD, the first session begins October 9 for a virtual kick-off event.

What can go wrong with modeling? Find out at the next Explorer Series Lecture

In her Explorer Series Lecture, NSF NCAR scientist Dr. May Wong will talk about what goes into a numerical weather prediction modeling system, including the initial state of the atmosphere to the prediction output, what makes forecasting the weather with these modeling systems so challenging at times, and how scientists work towards improving them. Join us in-person at the Mesa Lab or virtually to learn all about modeling.
