Management Plan
A sanctuary management plan is a site-specific planning and management tool that describes the sanctuary's goals, objectives, regulations, and boundaries. It guides future activities, outlines needs, and sets priorities and performance measures for resource protection, research, and education programs. The original Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Management Plan was written as part of the sanctuary designation process and published in the Final Environmental Impact Statement.
The current Final Management Plan was prepared by NOAA and the state of Michigan in cooperation with the Thunder Bay Sanctuary Advisory Council and with input from the public, local governments, state and federal agencies, and other stakeholders. The plan consists of four action plans and sets priorities to guide sanctuary programs and operations, providing the public with a better understanding of the sanctuary’s strategies to protect Thunder Bay’s resources.
Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s Final Management Plan was adopted on August 25, 2009.
