Matthew Weisenberger, Ph.D., associate director of the Carbon Materials Research Group at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER), has been named the American Carbon Society’s 2024 Graffin Lecturer. “Dr. Weisenberger is most deserving of this honor,” said Rodney Andrews, CAER director. “He and his team have built one of North America’s leading carbon materials research and development organizations and are the forefront of discovery and innovation in this space. Qing Shao, from the University of Kentucky College of Engineering, has been awarded more than $1.3 million from The National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine to develop AI large protein language models for biomedical applications. Shao’s project, “Structure-Function-Aware Large Protein Language Models for Enhanced Biomedical Applications,” aims to develop artificial intelligence models that can predict critical information about proteins, which could help in understanding diseases and discovering new treatments.
