Movie: Michael Collins
This was the first movie date my husband took me on and I will always have a soft spot for it over that. Also the Sinead O'Connor gender-flipped rendition of She Moved Through the Fair is heartbreaking.

Doctor Who: The Star Beast
I am not a big RTD fan and approached his return to the series with caution, but I'm willing to forgive a great deal for undoing what he did to Donna, even if it was clunky. Donna was my favorite companion of the Ten era and her end was just Wrong.

He hasn't entirely wiped the slate clean with me. I'm still cautious, but yeah, OK, that was good and I'll keep going.

The thing I noticed about the giant swoopy TARDIS interior is we now have a wheelchair-using scientific advisor for UNIT and a TARDIS that might be able to accommodate her needs.

I've been recommending this a lot in threads about twitter/social media and politics and polarization recently because I think it really is on point for a lot of those issues. The blurb I quoted (and forgot to mark as the publisher's quote, sorry!) is a bit overblown but the book is worth your time if you're interested in the topic(s).

Movie: The Adventures of Tintin
I remember enjoying this but yeah, Uncanny Valley. I think I'd rather see the Tintin stories hand-animated.

Book: The Invisible Kingdom
O'Rourke's story isn't my story (I had a diagnosis before I reached adulthood and also had a parent to act as medical advocate for me because I was still in high school) but it resonated with my experience as a patient with chronic autoimmune problems. If you or your loved one are dealing with one of these mystery illnesses, this book is worth your time.

Book: The Cloisters
This was algorithmically picked for me because I read a lot of genre fiction, I think, but it's the litfic take on genre. It has a definite touch of magic but it's hard to tell whether it's actual magic or just the psychological effects thereof. As someone who went to grad school in medieval history and would have given various teeth and limbs to go to The Cloisters as a research assistant (and enjoyed visiting the museum when I lived in NYC), I would have enjoyed it anyway but I didn't expect… [more]
