Confusion between Vikings and Normans

[edit]

The yellow color that marks the Viking expansion in the 11th century confuses the Vikings and the Normans. In the 11th century, the Normans were not Vikings at all, they were mainly Norman knights from the Duchy of Normandy who conquered England, southern Italy and Sicily. They were mostly Christian and Romance-speaking. Nortmannus (talk) 16:33, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I was just about to make a post here Nortmannus and it seems you beat me to it. The issue as I see it is this:
- It both labels England as being settled by Scandinavians in the 11th century (see w:Sweyn Forkbeard and w:Cnut)
- It attributes Norman settlements in Italy and Africa to Vikings/Scandinavians which I reckon is pushing it and I defer to the opinions of those who know more about Normans
- It also is a bit iffy as the Anglo-Saxon migrations also consisted of many from what we'd now call Scandinavia but this is likely a less significant point as what Scandinavia means, especially in the 5th century is a bit more messy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ingwina (talk • contribs) 13:56, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We really need an updated map to sort this right? In the meanwhile we can put disclaimers explaining this, or remove the pictures. Ingwina (talk) 13:52, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, an updated map is certainly needed. Carlstak (talk) 01:16, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
