Roads and intra‐national trade: Evidence from Italian regions

Abstract: This paper investigates the role of motorway infrastructure in determining the export propensity of Italian regions. First, exporter fixed effects are estimated using a gravity model. Then, in a second step of the analysis, they are used as a proxy for export propensity and are regressed on highways endowment. Since there may be endogeneity issues, to investigate the causal relation between highways and export propensity, a historical route instrumental variable approach is followed, using the ancient Roman road network as a source of exogenous variation. Results show that, even when controlling for geographic, economic, and historical factors, a 10% increase in the provision of motorways leads to about a 1.3–2% increase in exports. Este artículo investiga el papel de la infraestructura de autopistas en la determinación de la propensión a la exportación de las regiones italianas. En primer lugar, se estiman los efectos fijos del exportador utilizando un modelo de gravedad. A continuación, en un segundo paso del análisis, se utilizan como proxy de la propensión a la exportación y se hace una regresión sobre la dotación de autopistas. Dada la posibilidad de problemas de endogeneidad, para investigar la relación causal entre las autopistas y la propensión a la exportación se siguió un enfoque de variables instrumentales de ruta histórica, utilizando como fuente de variación exógena la antigua red de carreteras romanas. Los resultados muestran que, incluso controlando los factores geográficos, económicos e históricos, un aumento del 10% en la dotación de autopistas conduce a un incremento de las exportaciones de entre el 1,3% y el 2%. 本稿では、イタリアの地域における輸出傾向の決定における自動車道路インフラの役割を調査した。はじめに、輸出業者の固定効果を重力モデルを用いて推定する。次に、分析の第2段階として、輸出業者の固定効果を輸出傾向の代理として使用し、高速道路の賦存量で回帰分析を行う。内生性の問題がある可能性があるため、「歴史的ルート」の手段変数アプローチに倣い、古代ローマの道路網を外生的変動の源として使用して、高速道路と輸出傾向の因果関係を調査する。結果から、地理的、経済的、歴史的因子を調整しても、自動車道路の建設が10%増加すると、輸出が約1.3~2%増加することが示される。
