Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to investigate empirically the major factors that influence choices between farming and non-farming activities as exclusive occupations, vis-à-vis diversification, across a large sample of rural households in India. A detailed survey of the extant literature reveals that the evidence on occupational choice among rural households as function of several factors is not too common. In addition, utilizing two subsequent rounds of micro-data from IHDS (India Human Development Survey) database for India is rare, thereby offering enough room for this specific inquiry.
