World's first microbe 'zoo' opens in Amsterdam →
The world’s first “interactive microbe zoo” has opened in Amsterdam shining new light on the tiny creatures that make up two-thirds of all living matter.
Let me take a moment to remind you that the title of ‘the woman to get hurt the most by leaked photos’ is still held by Rosalind Franklin.
RARE CANCER SEEN IN 41 HOMOSEXUALS →
Doctors in New York and California have diagnosed among homosexual men 41 cases of a rare and often rapidly fatal form of cancer. Eight of the victims died less than 24 months after the diagnosis was made. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, and there is as yet no evidence of contagion. But the doctors who have made the diagnoses, mostly in New York City and the San Francisco Bay area, are alerting other physicians who treat large numbers of homosexual men to the problem in an effort to help identify more cases and to reduce the delay in offering chemotherapy treatment.
Hmmm…. interesting
Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) is a toxin-producing bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. Despite being a serious organism, it has a very pun worthy name! Each letter on this shirt is filled with a different kind of microorganism. Any microbiology fan would get a kick out of this shirt!

A virus frozen for at least 30,000 years has come back to life and become infectious again
PREPARE FOR ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!!!
On a serious note, this virus doesn’t seem to infect humans fortunately. But the bad news is, there could be other viral species/strains out there that could emerge similar to this that are capable of infecting mammals but not fully adapted to infecting humans. And cross species transmission into a host that’s not fully adapted can have dangerous results….

Nanoparticle Vaccine Yields Better Protection
Many viruses and bacteria infect humans through mucosal surfaces, such as those in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract and reproductive tract. To help fight these pathogens, scientists are working on vaccines that can establish a front line of defense at mucosal surfaces.
Vaccines can be delivered to the lungs via an aerosol spray, but the lungs often clear away the vaccine before it can provoke an immune response. To overcome that, MIT engineers have developed a new type of nanoparticle that protects the vaccine long enough to generate a strong immune response — not only in the lungs, but also in mucosal surfaces far from the vaccination site, such as the gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts.
