Potter is translated into Hindi
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is nearly 900 pages long
The first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is to be translated into Hindi, the official language of India.

The book will hit Indian bookshops on 14 November with a first run of 40,000.

Publishers were prompted to look at its potential in print because of the popularity of the Potter movies in India, which were dubbed into Hindi.

The translator said he had to read JK Rowling's novel 35 times to get the feeling of the language.

"It was a very difficult experience," said Sudhir Dixit, an assistant professor of English at the Narmada College.

The first volume of the Potter series appeared in English in India six years ago.

But Vikas Rakheja, managing director of Manjul Publishing House, said: "A lot of Indians are not comfortable with English. We are trying to fill that gap."

Mr Rakheja, based in Bhopal, said he hoped within a few months to sell more than 100,000 copies priced at 165 rupees (US$3.60 or £2.12) each.

Hindi is spoken by more than 400 million of India's billion-plus population and is understood in most parts of the country.

In all, the Potter series has been translated into more than 60 languages worldwide.
