Clarksdale, Mississippi— Coahoma Community College (CCC) continues to demonstrate its commitment to civic engagement and community leadership. Recently, the Marching Maroon Typhoon received a donation from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) through its "Mississippi Got Now" initiative. The donation, presented as a token of appreciation, recognizing the band for having the largest school organization turnout at a recent SPLC-hosted voting event.
The SPLC event, held to inspire voter awareness and participation among young people, saw participation from schools and organizations across Mississippi. The Marching Maroon Typhoon stood out by representing the institution with the largest school organization turnout, demonstrating that the band’s impact extends far beyond the field.
Eddie Buggs, Director of Bands, praised the students’ efforts and enthusiasm. "I am incredibly proud of our students for stepping up and showing out not just as musicians but as engaged citizens," Buggs said. "Their dedication to excellence on and off the field is a true reflection of what we stand for at Coahoma Community College. This donation will help us continue to foster that spirit of commitment and leadership."
The check donation will support the band’s continued efforts in advancing student development and community involvement. This acknowledgment also aligns with the broader mission to empower students to excel as leaders and engaged citizens.
Dr. Kelvin Towers, Chair of Fine Arts and Director of Choir Activities, commended the band for their leadership and dedication. "The Marching Maroon Typhoon is a powerful example of how the arts can drive community impact," said Towers. "Their presence at the event not only showcased their talent but also their commitment to being active participants in shaping the future.”
