NICOLAS OF LYRA

Nicolas of Lyra is important for Julian studies because he was instrumental in the 1310 condemnation of Marguerite Porete for her book, the Mirror of Simple Souls, because St Birgitta's Magister Mathias was his student, and because Birgitta's Alfonso of Jaen cites him in dialectic in his defense of St Birgitta's visions in the Epistola solitarii and because Julian's Adam Easton cites him in dialectic in his Defense of St Birgitta, the Defensorium Sanctae Birgittae, the canonization document arguing that women's visions are valid. Nicolas of Lyra's Postilla super totam Bibliam was a major text for introducing the knowledge of the Bible in Hebrew into Christian theological studies.
