Space junk since 1957-- ~95% are orbital debris

Scientists have been sending stuff into space, ever since the launch of the world's 1st satellite Sputnik in 1957. Millions of pieces (originally useful) are now floating fast in space. Even a small object (e.g., 1 cm of mass 1.41 g) can have a big impact (with an energy 70.7 Joules, similar to a falling piano) especially if it collides head on with something moving at a similar speed.
