Produced water economics and beneficial reuse

The mission of our research is to determine the cost points where water reuse is a viable option.

We consider raw water quality, available reuse options, disposal costs, and other factors when determining the value of reuse in any given application. Specific tasks that our group is addressing include:

  • Quantify the benefits from reduced re-injection of produced water, in terms of a lowered probability of seismic events
  • Carry out an economic and benefits analysis of increased surface water inflows, including drinking water inputs
  • Characterize benefits of increase in drinking water inflow associated with average amount of produced water
  • Determine costs associated with each of the three levels of quality in reclaimed water.
