Hebrew: אֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנִים —transliteration: achashdarpan

This word is only found in the King James Version of Esther 3:12; 8:9; 9:3 and Ezra 8:36.

This refers to a specific type of governor of a Persian province who had both military and civil power. They were protectors of the realm.

It is more correctly translated in the Revised King James Version and New American Standard Bible as “satrap.”
