  31. Interestingly, none (with the possible exception of number 4) deal with contagion effects arising initially from the failure of a single or small number of banks. Bordo (1989) distinguishes between factors leading to panics according to whether they are internal - arising from poor management, poor judgment, or dishonesty - and those that are external - arising from changes inrelative prices and the overall price level. However, this fails to include the possibility of panics arising from contagion effects. That is, situations in which a well managed bank might suffer a depositor run as a result of the failure of some other bank.
