English: Divine Retribution 2024 Davin Arries b 1999 Oil on canvas depicts the events of Revelation chapter 6 verse 7 to 8 which states: "7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth."
The Lamb opens the fourth seal. Resulting in Death, being the forth horsemen, going forth with Hades possessing power over a fourth of the earth, and meant to kill by sword, famine, plague and by the wild beasts of the earth. The subject focus of the piece, being Death on a pale horse, is seen on the right. Directly below and to the left we see Hades and a number of wild beasts including a squirrel, snake, wolf and pig. On the same level behind this row we see birds of seeming golden color, along with locusts and a reptile, this grouping of elements, which is directly below and to the left of the subject matter, is depicted coming from a distinct place into heaven. This placial distinction is further supported by the way both the animals and Hades are interacting with the rim of its circumference. Most notably in the fact that the lower half of Hades, and the beast directly to the right of him is occluded by the rim of the placial distinction whereas Death on the pale horse is seemingly not affected by this distinction. The distinction is surrounded by changing colors which are going forth from a pure white. In the background, above the previously mentioned elements and on the eye level of the figure Death, attention is brought to two prominent figures in the top left. Depicted here is a figure of jasper and ruby sitting atop a emerald throne. In front of the figure being seven blazing lamps. And directly to the of the seated figure a figure in a pure white robe, wearing brown sandals, a red sashe and holding a golden scroll. These three elements in the work representing God the Father, the seven lamps the Holy Spirit as revealed in Zechariah 4:2-6, and Jesus the SON of God as revealed in Revelation Chapter 4 verse 1 to Chapter 5 verse 14, which describes the figure on the throne and the Lamb whom is alone worthy to open the scrolls. Directly to the lower left and right of the Trinity at the appoximate medium of the painted piece are elder as mentioned in scripture bowing in prostration before the LORD. Finally To the top right and left of the Trinity we see clouds enclosed in arcs. Die Lam maak die vierde seël oop. Dit het gelei tot die Dood, wat die vierde perderuiters was, wat saam met Hades uitgetrek het wat mag oor 'n vierde van die aarde besit, en bedoel was om deur swaard, hongersnood, pes en deur die wilde diere van die aarde dood te maak. Die onderwerpfokus van die stuk, synde Dood op 'n vaal perd, word regs gesien. Direk onder en aan die linkerkant sien ons Hades en 'n aantal wilde diere insluitend 'n eekhoring, slang, wolf en vark. Op dieselfde vlak agter hierdie ry sien ons voëls van oënskynlike goue kleur, saam met sprinkane en 'n reptiel, hierdie groepering van elemente, wat direk onder en links van die onderwerp is, word uitgebeeld wat van 'n duidelike plek in die hemel kom. Hierdie plasiale onderskeid word verder ondersteun deur die manier waarop beide die diere en Hades met die rand van sy omtrek interaksie het. Veral in die feit dat die onderste helfte van die doderyk, en die dier direk regs van hom, deur die rand van die plasiale onderskeid afgesluit word, terwyl die dood op die bleek perd skynbaar nie deur hierdie onderskeid geraak word nie. Die onderskeid word omring deur veranderende kleure wat uit 'n spierwit voortkom. In die agtergrond, bokant die voorheen genoemde elemente en op ooghoogte van die figuur Dood, word die aandag gebring op twee prominente figure links bo. Hier word 'n figuur van jaspis en robyn uitgebeeld wat bo-op 'n smaragtroon sit. Voor die figuur is sewe brandende lampe. En direk na die van die sittende figuur 'n figuur in 'n spierwit kleed, met bruin sandale, 'n rooi sjerp en 'n goue boekrol vas. Hierdie drie elemente in die werk verteenwoordig God die Vader, die sewe lampe die Heilige Gees soos geopenbaar in Sagaria 4:2-6, en Jesus die SEUN van God soos geopenbaar in Openbaring Hoofstuk 4 vers 1 tot Hoofstuk 5 vers 14, wat die figuur op die troon en die Lam wat alleen waardig is om die rolle oop te maak. Direk links en regs van die Drie-eenheid by die benaderde medium van die geverfde stuk is ouderlinge soos genoem in die Skrif wat in neerbuigende voor die HERE buig. Ten slotte Regs en links bo van die Drie-eenheid sien ons wolke wat in boë ingesluit is. Soos gereeld by die Suid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar Davin Arries is daar 'n handtekening in die onderste linkerhoek van die stuk. |
